Hi, new to landyzone and looking for advice.
My 62 plate landrover freelander has started to get exhaust fumes coming into the car.
Local garage thinks could be blocked DPF and suggested it has diagnostics done, I don’t do motorway driving so would a good run help? It was very smelly and the garage said dangerous fumes.
What kind of miles do we need to do to try and clear it, any advice appreciated.

Take it on a motor way run for at least 30 miles running at 60 MPH even longer if you could but minimum of 30 miles it takes at least a good 30 minutes drive at that speed to start burning the build up off, have a nice run out to wales and visit the sea side make a day of it, better than paying for a garage to charge for dianostics, then say to you Ho it needs a new DPF £850 + in my opinion

If the garage THINK it’s the dpf at fault and SUGGEST you get a diagnostic done then one can only assume they haven’t done a diagnostic themselves and don’t really know if the dpf is at fault or not. They should have checked for leaks but you never know. Driving it in the hope it will fix itself won’t work if fumes are leaking.

Fumes into the car can only be caused by emissions from the engine getting into the car. The exhaust emits harmful gasses. It is unlikely these will get into the car after exiting the exhaust tail pipe, then enter via the fresh air intake at the front, but not impossible. It’s more likely to be from a leak after the fumes exit the engine down the exhaust. The first thing to do it check for leaks. You can do this the old-fashioned way by starting with a cold engine on a cold day. Start the engine and try to block the exhaust pipe to restrict flow of fumes out of it. While doing this get someone else to look for signs of leaking fumes under the car and in/around the engine bay. Be careful not to kill yerself with the fumes. Be careful not to burn yerself as the gasses get hotter as the engine warms up.

Yer Freelander has a complex emission system which is monitored. If the dpf were full to the extent there’s a problem stopping it from regenerating (not getting warm enough and driving fast enough) then the dash display would put up a message warning the dpf is full and at some point you would get a reduced power output from the engine. You need to travel at 37 to 70mph for it to regenerate. It can take as little as 9 minutes for regeneration but should be complete within 20. The regeneration process doesn’t need to fully complete. It just needs to start. Once the process starts it will start to empty (burn oft) the soot leaving more space. If regeneration doesn’t complete it just means the car will flag a request to regenerate sooner than it would have if it completed.

A diagnostic will advise the distance since last regeneration, the number of generation requests in the cars life time, the number of failed to complete regenerations, if the car has put up a flag to request regeneration and indicate how full the dpf is. This is the only way to find out if there’s a problem with the dpf if there is one other than physical damage.

that should put a engine light on and limp home mode not fill the car with fumes
