Hi all,
I've been running over a few things on my D1, trying to get it as up together as possible. When replacing the rear wheel bearings it has come quite apparent that she is in dire need of some new rear discs.

My question - Are drilled and grooved discs really worth the extra £20ish? I've found a set on eBay, and I'm torn between these or some normal Mintex discs.

All opinions welcome!

Many thanks, Jack.

The rear discs are under less stress than the front ones, consequently they wear less and therefore aren't subject to the same amount of heating as the fronts either.
For the rear discs, plain discs are quite adequate.
If your rear discs are showing definite signs of wear, maybe you ought to check the front discs too. PDQ.

Hi Brian,

Many thanks - your thoughts mirrored mine. Was planning on checking the fronts tonight. Would you agree that it's a good idea to replace the fronts with drilled and grooved perhaps?

Many thanks, Jack.

Hi
Probably not worth going for drilled or grooved discs.
Normally used on high performance vehicles, but less so for racing cars as slotted discs are preferred.
Drilled discs can help dissipate water but if you use the vehicle in mud they will obviously get clogged up.
Drilled discs can also be prone to cracking.
Slots can help clear pad material from the disc but according to a friend of mine they can also be very noisy!
So yes slotted/drilled discs look cool, but not really required, and in the case of drilled ones, they may cause longer term issues with durability.

As Mark said,

If you use the Disco off road I would avoid the drilled/grooved discs as they can clog up with mud, stones etc - pain in the backside ;)

Hi Brookstain... I bought a new set of Mintex rear discs for a Discovery 1 by mistake instead of for my Discovery 2... my mistake so I couldn't return them. :-(

I still have them brand new in the box if you're interested. ?
