I have been off road driving in Land rovers since I was 14. both at competitive level and fun days. That may only be 11 years but I have only broken 2 shafts.
1. The first shaft was due to wear a 20 year old drive shaft that was worn and had been put under much strain over the years finally gave up no surprise really.
2. The second was a brand new supposidly HD drive shaft 24 spline. Which was actually a cheap and nasty copy of a Dana (salisbury) shaft from Britpart. LR go to serious lengths to temper their shafts properly to achive a great all round long lasting drive shaft. Cheap copies are useless as I found LR shafts are £100 odd pounds for a reason £20 odd pound shafts are never going to be any good.
Alot comes down to driving style. I push my land rover hard nobody can deny that. But I do not drive like a C*nt. Mechanical Sympathy or understanding of whats going on aswell as actually caring about your stuff and maintainance will save you the fortune.
I have lost count the number of times some people have blown up diffs shafts and cv's in an old spunky Disco/RR/Defender that has been neglected not even serviced taken offroad and abused on a weekly basis when their drive train finally goes pop because they have been stuck spinning up opposite wheels for 5 minutes blatting their way though a bad bit they are far too hasty to blame 'Weak' drive train components. Many a time I have seen diffs full of muddy water and sludge when they remove a 'blown' diff on the side of a valley then replace it with another s/h one of unlnown condition without even trying to seal it with means of a gasket of silicone.
Yes Agreed LR isnt the strongest but they are good if looked after and used correctly. Somtimes with comps you have to give it some abuse and granted somtimes you get failures. But alot of failures begin in the drivers seat.
A V8 110 especially had a great combination of salisbury rear and uprated front as standard which if looked after and driven with care and mechanical sympathy will take much punishment.
Gearboxes well Lt77 thats another matter I hate them with a passion but thats a whole different matter.
