About to fit the ladder frame to the block, when I decided to check the books to confirm the sealent. They both (Haynes and LR workshop manual) say to use Hylogrip 2000. As this costs £74 for enough to do one frame, I wondered if there are cheaper alternatives? Otherwise I'll have to go without the benefits of beer for another week!

I've got clear and black RTV sealent - any good for this?

black rtv silicone is what i use and ive built a good few get a reasonable quality one £6-7 normally, ensure mating surfaces are oil free with thinners ,brake clean petrol etc

What JM says. Just make sure everything is spotlessly clean, degreased, and dry, otherwise it wont seal properly. I used Hylomar Blue as it was what I had and had no problems for over two years before my old engine went bang. (Not related I should add)

Resurrecting this one. i see there are two types of Hylomar black, one with and one without the acetic stuff. They are 102 or 302, so I guess one is setting and one not? Which is best for sealing ladder frame to block please?
