When mine went I got green flag to take it to the gearbox specialist then picked it up a few days later with my gearbox reconditioned and a recon TC and whatever else he did for just under £1500, seems like a bargain now.:D

I am living in the South of France, so exchange gearboxes significantly drive up my costs. I have got a mate with a van who is planning on a trip to the UK as soon as covid restrictions allow who can bring one down for me if I get it delivered to his UK address.

Damn, your à good way down there!!!
Did you get lost on your way to Spain :p

That sounds very interesting. The auto box seems to be s**t and a manual box conversion seems the ideal answer. How much work was involved and what parts did you use? were there any problems with the electronics?

most parts came from a scrap bmw x3, the gear leaver from a golf and built a box of resisters to simulate the gear box,
easy does 70 in park:), since doing it ive been looking at better ways of doing it since i know im going to have to do it to my business partners one at some point

I have just spoken to my mate and he is very interested in doing a similar conversion. We are going to start checking availability of X3 parts and the cost. I assume that you used clutch, and pedals from the X3. I assume the same engine is fitted to the X3 but did the bell housing bolt straight to the LR engine or did you need to make adapter plates.

the lr engine is the bmw engine, i had access to a scrap 05 x3 which is why i went the way i did, but i now see an easy way to get the same result, if you use the diesel 6 speed with bmw transfer box you need to modifier the transfer box cradle and prop shafts which is the way i went, but if you use the petrol 6 speed with a 25mm adapter plate you can use the rr transfer box and props as is

OK, so we need to look for a BMW X3 petrol engined with a 6 speed box. Might be difficult here in France as they are in love with diesels and you see very few petrol engines. Could maybe find one in UK and get it shipped down.

well you would only need the petrol gear box and pedal box, gear lever was from an early golf, fly wheel and clutch new come as a kit with all bolts

I would certainly be interested in doing something similar with mine... currently ok. But would definitely go manual if cheaper
