Why would you want to re map a TD6?
manly for fuel economy, and any other advantages.

A remap will lunch the G box.
Unless it has been replaced/rebuilt OBVS.
Sonnax Valvebody is a good addition if the box is still smooth / running ok..

The more power,more torque and better fuel economy ads are bullshit. A more linear map may improve mpg on a long run at steady speed on a motorway. General driving use the power you WILL use more fuel.
my 2005 as 170,000 miles no history of having a replacement gear box, I have had my fair share of problems I don't want to had too the list, in view of feedback I will leave well alone unless I hear any good reviews, thanks

Is there a way of telling if one has been re mapped?
I picked mine up not too long ago after a gearbox and TC refurb and the guy asked me what I had done to the engine as it pulled like a train and was the best TD6 one he had driven

I think the only way to be sure is to get someone with mapping gear to run a check but I think they would charge a fee to run it, I'm getting 19mpg at the moment could do with a little more, don't want risk any damage to gear box as I can get it mapped to 210bhp and big increase in tourque. Rob

I'm getting around 20mpg round town and 30mpg on a good run. I guess the increase in torques isn't a problem as long as you don't boot it.
I'm on the side of having it done in the next two weeks, will let you know how it goes,

I only got the car in november so have no idea if it has been done by a previous owner or not. I Personally wouldn't bother getting it done given the cheese gearbox, but then I won't be getting it checked to see if has been done either.
I would just say it's your choice and depending on your driving style it may not be a problem. I drive relatively sensible these days and I don't tow anything either so it shouldn't stress the gearbox too much.
Good luck if you do get it done and make sure you put £1500 aside for the GB/TC rebuild for when it does need doing

Except that a remap may well eliminate the torque reduction strategy used on gear shifts and so may knacker the gearbox regardless. What the remap is unlikely to do is improve MPG

The M57 is grossly detuned for the L322, for some reason..
When they say "remap" its usually to get it to "BMW" figures and then some.
The M57D30TÜ is a good example. 220hp and 500nm.
Compared to the 170hp and 390nm of the L322 M57.

Hopefully the op will report back with some astonishing mpg increase..................................or maybe not.
When I want to save fuel I just go on the bike, 57mpg
Depending on what type map the OP is having, it could well reduce fuel consumption a little if driven very 'sensibly' and taking advantage of the extra torque. (At the gearbox's expense of course)
Boot it about and it will use more fuel than it did before, as those 6 injectors are going to squirt in more go go juice into the cylinders than ever before.
The M57 engine maps very, very well.....but not when mated to the GM box IMO.
I have a 520D which I had remapped (mainly to get shot of the EGR....). and on a run that does 3/4mpg more.
For the extra few MPG you could/may get.......it's going to take a lot of miles racking up to warrant a £2k + gearbox rebuild.
