L322 Compressor

Hi All

Looked through some posts nut unsure of some details.

Took out my air compressor yesterday on my RR vogue SE late 2005, been told its a hitachi
compressor. Oblong not round.

Took off the black pipe as advised and ran the compressor.

Just how much air should be coming out, I put my finger over the outlet and
there is air coming out but I can almost stop it with my thumb, I say almost it still squeeks a little.

Dont have a pressure gauge so any advice ?

Hi Graham,
Looks like your compressor needs a rebuild as you have no output. You can choose to do it yourself there are kits on the bay, alternatively, get a reconditioned assembly complete, plug and play solution.
If you are going to rebuild don't forget the air moisture chamber needs to be refilled as it looks as though there has been a lot of water in the boot by the rust!
There are many posts on rebuilding personally I found mine to be in such a state when stripped down that the service kit didn't make much difference so I treated my baby to a brand new on, don't even ask how much that was but all problems solved in a few hours at the JLR dealer. I must have lost my mind but I've come to terms with what I did. o_O
Whatever you do keeping moisture out of the boot has to be a top priority. I'm doing the same but without a final solution yet. It's a whole other journey. Good luck.

Well tried another compresser but same result, nothing. Stumped now

do you have access to a diagnostic machine reader to check actual values?
i know from experience that the nt530 foxwell will read this and tell you what pressure is being made,what valves and exhausts are doing also, sadly with out diagnostics you could get lucky in changing something but with out one its guess work
 
yes we had just a few eas faults!
it took a while to get to the bottom of it
but got there in the end with great help from the guys on here:)

Apart from the front & rear cross-link valves, the L322 air system is very similar to the Mercedes Airmatic.

As for any air system, check everywhere for air leaks.

The L322 will shut down on low pressure or temp or it’s been running and nothing is happening, but should say something on the screen as a clue.

But checking for leaks is going back to basics ;) agreed.

Plugging in appropriate diagnostics would help.

Never tried it but I wonder if my CDP Autocom DS150 will read L322 eas. It certainly read other systems on a mates L323 few years ago but don’t have access to one now.

I dont I took the car initially to a garage and they said it was the compressor. I later found out they didnt even connect the diags they were just sure.

The other compressor I tried was for a breakers yard. Came up he "Supension Fault" message still.

I've decided to buy a diags tool as I cant seem for anyone with the tools thats mobile in my area Milton Keynes. Cant really afford to do
that, so that's why I thought someone mobile would be better.

I'll try get my hands on one of the diags mentioned, I did see the icarsoft version, not sure if that will help diagnose the compressor pressue.

Also ordered a relay just in case its that.
 
Compressor is easy to test. All you need are some airline fittings, tubing & a 200psi gauge. Connect the gauge directly to either compressor outlet, or the other end of the airline where it feeds the main valve block Then apply 12V directly to the pump power leads. No diagnostics required for that

Gauge should rise to 180-200psi within 4-5 seconds. If it doesn't achieve pressure, the piston ring & seals need replacing. Assuming it's the Wabco pump, X8R do a kit for £17.99. If you have the Hitachi pump the kits are more expensive.

I initially replaced the ring and it was worse.. the cylinder wears badly and the above is a ring and head for only £17.it says Audi but it fits L322. it says it takes weeks from China but turned up in 3 days. I fitted it and its perfect now.

Thanks for diagram, I'm not sure I'm confident I can refurb it myself to be honest. It looks in surprisingly good condition and I'm wondering if its anything elsse.

Without using a gauge is there a very quick way of testing the compressor. As I said when I put my finger over the black outlet that goes to the blaxck line there is pressure but not much it squeeks a little but you cant feel that much ?

Your pumps worn out it needs sorting you have nothing to loose by taking it a part and putting in a new liner and seal if it is beyond you when its apart just buy another then play with the old one and if you manage it you have a spair:D
