Trying a different thread as less than helpful comments on the general thread....
Hi Everyone, we have an L322 2010, tdv8 with an odd battery drain, press the start button fires up then instantly cuts out.
Battery is good
Alternator is charging
We've changed the heater resistor.
Doesn't happen all the time, only when your running late for work 🤣
Husband is a mechanic but hates electrics, so help gratefully recieved before he starts threatening to "torch the bleedy thing"
Thanks in advance
Range rover wife.

Looks like you discovered the Anything goes thread. Deffo took a wrong turn there :). That should really be called the Take the p1ss thread but now you have the right section you should get sensible answers.

The 2010 is a bit newer than mine but anyway. What makes you think it's a battery drain, do all the electrics cut out and go dead?

Dosent sound like battery drain to me, so as above ^^^

This may sound silly but is it cos you are in a hurry and take you foot of the break to soon.
I have done it a couple of times, where the engine seems to start and I release the break and it all gos off.
Does it start afterwards or is it still dead?

Oh and Welcome to a "safeish" space :).

J

When we leave it with the smart charger over night, it doesn't happen and then we you put a jump pack on it, fires up and keeps running. It's a bit odd as it initially fires up and cuts out straight away

No it still fires up and then cuts out again, Simon says it feels like it just doesn't have enough power the run all the systems

I've just changed battery on my P38 as battery not holding charge was causing all sorts of electrical faults with different systems when running. Biggest powerfullest battery you can get and that will fit in battery tray recommended

Low battery voltage can still turn the engine over but not be high enough to power the ECU's.
What voltage is on the battery in the morning without the smart charger?

Battery not being able to hold a charge or earth lead to engine corroded.
what is the voltage on the battery engine off , has it been load tested
a good battery should be 12.8 volts having been left over night less than 12,5 and its considered dead

As others have said, it sounds like a failing battery to me. As well as it having a minimum of 12.7 volts after standing overnight, you should see around 14.8 volts immediately after starting if the alternator is doing it's job.
