L322 3.6 TDV8 [2007] vs 4.4 Petrol [2003]

Afternoon, everyone!

I am new to the forum. I am in the market for an L322 and have shortlisted it down to 2.

Option one has 121,000 miles, 4.4 V8 BMW 2003. 9.500 EUR.
Option two has 205,000 miles from the 3.6 TDV8. 5,000 EUR.

Both from dealers and both have solid service history.

From my understanding, the 3.6 TDV8 is a more reliable setup all over. Especially gearboxes.

I am based in Austria so unfortunately, I have very limited access to knowledge.

205000 miles or kilometres? If miles I would say it's at a point where it will need a lot of attention in the near future.

Thanks for the response. 205,000 miles, 330,000 km. I would be buying it with the expectation of having to sink 4,000 EUR into it over the next 6 months or so. It will not be my only car.

Only planning to do 4 - 6k miles per year in it... Not sure if I am insane or not by considering one.

I just adore them. One plus is that I won't have to pay any additional tax and insurance on it as my current Audi is insured and you simply add it to the policy free.

No depreciation is the big one.

Worst case scenario I sell it with a major issue for 3k? Lost 2k on it... Not horrifying numbers.

The L322 is not appreciating over here some are selling for less than a P38, too complex and hard to fix unless you have good DIY skills including electronics. The price seems high considering the mileage and the age.
I suspect you could get a severe case of burnt fingers.

You could get a 4.4 TDV8 2011 for that amount of money these days and have a better engine train IMO

May have a little slush fund left over

I have heard the 4.4 TDV8 is the best of the lot, but I simply cannot get on with the look of the 3rd face lift of the L322.

I might just take the plunge and write of the 5k if it all goes pear shaped. I am sure I could even flog it for 2k with a major issue...

Who says the grill looks better or worse?
I love the 8 speed box and the engine, the grill, well I don’t see it sitting in the drivers seat so I can live with it

The market here is different. 4.4 TDV8s seem to demand a considerably higher premium. I would be looking at at least 16,000 EUR for a 165,000 km+ car.

That is one of the reasons why I love the cars between 05 - 09. Styling is amazing.

For me personally, the 09 facelift gave it a glitzy look that I am not particulary fond of. The digital display makes it more modern which turns me off...

I love the analog feel of the earlier 322s.

Just out of curiosity, what is the reputation of the naturally aspirated 4.4 Jag V8 petrol engine? Other posts have said that this, with the 4.2 SC, are the most reliable engines of them all..

Less common and comes with a burble...
