I have a Defender 110 V8 which has developed a gearbox noise.
All gears sound like a growling noise like a straight cut gearbox.
I have googled it and apparently these boxes are prone all gears are noisy except 4th.
As far as i can find out its the main shaft large bearing that causes the noise.
Does anyone here know if there is a additive that would help to make it less noisy as i didnt want to go for a gearbox rebuild due to me having to go for an automatic sometime in the near future because of a knee problem. :(

Have you checked the fluid? They need the levels checked and topped up regularly. I check mine every 6 months. As it happens, I've checked it today and my reverse switch has fallen out so I've got a fair leak, so I expect mine will need a decent topup.

they are prone for bearing wear ,if its noisy in all except 4th it would be a lay shaft bearing , it wont last long unless its repaired

Its been like it for two years now and most of that is pulling heavy loads.
Noise goes once i depress the clutch pedal.
