Can you wonderful people put me right in a problem I have. When a turn my freelander on full lock (from a standstill usually) I get this load knocking sound from under the car. I have checked under the car and the front shaft has no movement what so ever but the rear one can be wiggled about a mm or so either way. Could this be the loud noise, should the shafts have any play in them. Car is fine driving normally and normal turns, it only makes this loud noise on full wheel lock such as reversing into a parking space.

Many Thanks

Could be the constant velocity joints which are just inboard of the wheel bearings, the noise from which is more of a "clicking" sound than knocking when they are past their sell-by date.

Check the gaiters which protect them, are they split? If so dirt could have got in and caused damage.

Yes to the turning thing as the power distribution shifts from one side of the car to the other so the load on the driveshafts shift. The slow speed allows the click to be easier to isolate.

This could be hamsters problem but need to check VC bearings and rear diff issues as well.

Hi
I have a similar problem driving forward and turning on full lock no problem but when Ireverse I get a clicking sound sounds like its coming from the front

Fiver says this is the centre rear diff mount.

This sounds like the problem I have at the moment , got car booked into garage Tuesday but mine deffo from rear passenger side. I had a quick scan boot looks in good nick but could well be the mount , wont know till jacked up

Are they easy to fix replace ?

i have a similar noise more of a slapping noise when turning hard left not as loud when turning right any body no what this is

It could be the VC mounting bearings. I had this problem a while back when turning sharp corners like junctions. The bearings were fine, but the rubber bearing mounts were knackered. If you lay down by the side of your vehicle and slide your leg under, and against the VC, then give it a series of pushes, you may reproduce the knocking noise. This is how I found it on mine. :)

Hi...i have the same knocking sound problem with my Freelander. Today i managed to find what caused the knocking.I shot some pictures.
