knocking noise when gear changing and accelerating

just bought my first defender [89 90] and there is a painful knocking noise when i press down on the gas and change gear. i have deduced from this site that it may be the cv joint??
any help is welcome as i am a novice!!

do you mean universal joints might be worn or is cv joint compleatly wrong?!

A frame or g box output splines if on the original g box

Worn splines on the gearbox output shaft. You might get lucky and find it's something cheap and easy to fix though. Could be propshaft u/j's, a-frame ball joint, knackered bushes etc.
