I got in my fl1 yesterday after it had been parked for a few days and as I drove off, there was a knocking noise from somewhere near the back axle. The knocking increased with road speed, it sounded like someone was under there with a hammer. I turned round at the end of the road and parked up again. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should be looking for? It was perfectly alright when I last used it.

Cold may have tightened a UJ of sorts, not familiar with an Fl1 undersides ...
 
Yep that is a show stopper to be honest. However, it's just a possibility, do check please.
Could also be something silly.
 
Cyclist no seriously could the exhaust rubber mounts be worn causing the rear box to bounce. Mine doing this at the moment I think. Then again a cyclist has been reported missing recentlyo_O

I'll crawl under it later and have a look. I was about to flog it, so I'm glad it's happened now rather that when the new owner was driving it home.

I've crawled underneath it with a good torch but can't see anything obvious. If the chassis is cracked, is it visible from underneath. I wiggled the prop uj's with a sturdy screwdriver but they don't seem to be floppy. I'm tempted to just drive it and see what happens, alternatively, get the local garage to put it on the lift and see if they can find the problem. The thing is, it's probably worth about £500 before the knocking and about £200 scrap, so it's not worth spending any significant money on it

Is there a knock with each wheel revolution? does it occur even at very low speed? If it does, you might get someone to drive it slowly and for you to be outside to work out where the noise is coming from?

Bet it is a failed diff bush...
 
Cracked chassis happened years ago on the early FL1's. They were strengthened after that. Its a rare problem these days unless driven hard oft road.

If it's a tapping type noise at the back, have you made sure both exhaust box hangers are OK? I find I'm replacing them annually, along with the drop links. :mad:
 
The knocking noise is still mystifying me. My freelander has only done about 80,000 miles, never off-road. There is a fair bit of surface corrosion underneath but everything looks solid, I can't find any cracks anywhere. The bushes all look in good condition and don't seem to have any undue movement in them when levered with a pry bar. The knocking increases with road speed and when I apply the brakes, the noise changes, the knocking is still there but it seems to change frequency and is accompanied by a rubbing sound. I took it for a longer run and the noise eventually seemed to disappear. I think I might go back to driving with the radio up loud. If it doesn't rain today, I'll whip the wheels off and check out the brakes. The noise seems to be coming more from the front or centre now.

I know the drop links need changing again, that is a different sort of clonking noise more associated with road surface and the exhaust is secure.

I'd be doing a 1 wheel up test and checking tyre pressures. It doesn't cost nought to do that and will give you peace of mind that you're IRD shouldn't spontaneously implode.

Make sure you take the drums off on the back as well, make sure all the shoes are seated OK with no missing/corroded pins or springs.

Might be worth taking the props/VCU off as well see if the noise stops when they're not installed, can have a good look at the support bearings then as well.

Will do, the vcu and prop bearings are only 10,000 old so they should be ok.
