I have some play in the OS king pin. is it worth just removing a shim, or is it worth replacing both top & bottom bearings? Is it worth doing the other side (no play) or just do the one side?

It looks like a bit of a bugger to replace both bearings... is it?

Try removing shims (if there are any left) if theres still plenty grease left the bearing should be fine

If you do end up replacing the bearings you have to strip down the hub

part update....

Always check the wheel bearing first  .

i was convinced the problem was the king pins, as I couldnt detect any play horizontally, only vertically.

Having removed 15thou of shims, I could still detect almost the same amount of play, so thought I would check the wheel bearing. Although the tabs were present, the outer nut had slackened slightly and this enabled the inner to move about 1/4 of a flat. Nipped them both up again and the play had gone.

Just got to check the shims in the top king pin again and X fingers.
