I had to buy an adjustable pan hard rod a couple of years ago certainly no more than two and a half. All was well until I drove home Friday and evidently water has got into the threaded part and has eaten the threads. Fortunately I was only going slowly when it came apart going around a corner cos I dread to think what would happen if I was toeing it down the A38......





It steered to the right but trying to go straight or turn left was interesting :eek:
 
i would be inclined to weld a nut on the end of the tube and ignore the inner thread. It leaves the rod almost standard

Do not put a bolt thru it, as you will weaken the panhard rod too much.
 
Or slot both sides and clamp it like LR do on the steering rods - depending on how bad the corrosion is.

Can't help wondering if some grease might have helped protect it - but then I don't actually know what the car manufacturers do, so there's no criticism.
 
I reckon a few things have happened there
1, it was assembled dry.
2, because it was dry it was not tightened correctly even though its felt tight it wasnt.
3, should have been picked up when you serviced the motor, any rust means things are moving.

If you have drilled it and are driving it on the road you are a eejit of the highest order
Split and clamp will not work as wall thickness is to much

And that's friendly advice is it..... I hope you're kids or grandkids don't read this like other peoples do
 
Sorry but i have to agree with Lynall. Bad fitting practice, no steering joint or tie of this type should ever be assembled dry. A water proof grease such as Copraslip or better still water pump grease or Beeswax should be applied on assembly. Specially if your vehicle is to be used for off road activities. The joint must have been loose for some time to allow the threads to fret and wear away. So also poor maintenance. Sometimes the truth hurts learn from it.

Well Marmaduke I dont have kids or grandkids, but if I did and your car caused them any harm in the state you have admitted to driving it on the road in a bodge repaired state on a public forum, you are to daft to see the irony in your comment.

Its an essential part of the motor, get your wallet out and replace it now, if you cant afford it buy a car you can afford to run.

Im no fan of britpart, but have plenty of their kit on my motors because the price is right and thats the main reason people fit their stuff.

I did mention above the rust as evidence of stuff being loose, if you look at the axle behind the rod you will see its covered in water rust stains which says to me the arm has been loose and fretting for a long time for all that evidence to get blown back over the axle, theres even a small amount in the axle to rod mount bracket.
If you look at the threaded part of the joint thats exposed and note its not in line with the rod which says to me theres no thread left at all in the rod

If it was my ineptitude and it was on my car I would be horrified that i had missed such an obvious giveaway.

Serious stuff and you worry about my swearing!
 
Maybe a ' if that were mine I'd scrap the part and replace it ' might have been better than calling someone a **** on a public forum but there you go but hey ho your obviously a big man. Following TMHM'S advice I actually replaced the complete unit.
 
I must say that I know Marmaduke very well and under no circumstances does he cut corners when it comes to safety with his motors. He wasnt looking for abuse just some friendly advice. We are all here for the same reason we like land rovers and as much as it hurts are wallets we spend it where necessary.

Grow up and forget the name calling, you admitted to driving a dangerous vehicle on the public highway, what did you want me to say? well done you are obviously a big man!

I have brought one of these a few months back and havnt fitted it yet, maybe I should set it then weld it up?

I had to weld up the HD steering bars from paddocks as they tend to pull out the threads when off roading also
