Service kit arrived today - now do I service it before we go or after…!?!

would be tempted to do the service after unless It’s been a while since the last one, ie the fuel filter

must confess when I done my old TD4 fuel filter I I fitted a new fuel pump at the same time

that TW2 app looks brilliant

ps, in the future as ur so close to me if u ever need a hand with anything plse feel free to give me a shout , plenty of room on my drive and have plenty of tools etc, had a TD4 myself so always happy to assist where i can

Likewise
… any excuse to buy new tools!

I thought about the LP pump - I may well replace it. I don’t think it needs it yet, but it has a certain ‘whine’ to it

I service it every 6 months regardless of miles, and rotate the wheels (and spare) every 1000m, to keep even wear for the 4x4

My rationale for servicing for a newly aquired vehicle is to full service then oil service again in 1000 miles.
Depending on the quality of the oil at this point then i fall into standard routine of one service in autum (winter prep) including changing out summer washer fluid for winter stuff. Then again in spring for the summer fun.
I change coolant and brake fluid every three years.

similar as I do a service every year regardless of mileage , even in a year if it’s below 1,000 miles I’ll still do a full service

ref ur LP pump I took the complete assembly out with the filter and changed the lot , took it al, apart cleaned everything up before reinstalling a new pump and filter , plus cleaned the connector and associated wiring up as it didn’t look very good, ie, some of the wires had gone green so cut them back , redone with shrink tubing on there to protect it form the weather

talking of servicing I desperately wish to drain and refill my ATF oil , don’t like power flushing gearboxes , got 10 x litres of the ATF, it just a case of trying to get the filler plug out and refilling it

did do all the ATF oil on the TD4 , made the world of difference as sometimes it would thud into gear from park to drive , ,plus gear changes weren’t always smooth, after the oil change it sorted out all the issues

then fitted the crankcase BMW mod and new silicone intercooler hoses , blanked off the EGR , cleaned the Map sensor at the same time , really helped the engine and gearbox run a lot smoother

am the same ref engine oil, mine uses 7 x litres and think last time I paid around £75 for millers 5/30 as wanted to get decent oil, along with a genuine oil filter

just really struggle with anything underneath the D3 or getting the wheels off , next year the rear lower wishbones will need doing but after doing the brakes really want to get the ATF oil change and engine oil/ filter done

plus 1 to never having too many tools , some of the markets are brilliant when there’s a tool stall , got a great set of dentist like picks which were perfect getting O rings off or for cleaning threads etc off

sorry I’m waffling , lol

great advice my friend , know when I bought my D3 I done a full service regardless of service history as at least then u know where u stand going forward

will be changing all my brake fluid and always wondered why it’s different on the D3 requiring it to be class 6

next year mine is a due a full service , including the ATF oil change , also heard so many horror stories when some have had the auto box power flushed , ie, it cleans the plates off and then starts to slip, know that’s not always the case but main reason why I won’t power flush mine

When I first got mine I took it to Freelander specialist (.com) in Suffolk. I wanted it to have a once-over and also replace the VCU. At the time, it also needed a front driveshaft, so had the pair done and at the same time went all-in for gearbox drain. They offered me the flush but I too had heard horror stories… the guys there (husband and wife own it) said they regularly do them (like a few times a week) and have had no troubles at all. So, I had it done and it drives a dream.
They also do overlanding in their own Freelander, to the arctic circle and so on!

My next job, after service, is to drain down and replace IRD and rear diff, just for peace of mind

Done the crankcase filter mod
Installed a blank EGR (original casing and hoses, so no tester will ever know!)
Silicone intercooler hoses
Replaced all the vac lines

It’s the little things that keep us happy!

… update; just ordered a Bosch LP pump, to go on with the fuel filter, as part of the service.
(I was nearly tempted by those cheap versions…)

Just got to finish off putting new rad n intercooler in, what caffe n what time ?
