Excellent, where yer comin to??? Must try and pop over for a pint! Where ya staying, and are yer bringin the landy?

I think it's trelawne manor. It's just outside Looe. I'm not not sure if I'm gonna be in the Landy or the Astra yet. Probably the Astra cos it's cheaper to run and more comfortable in the back for my dad.

It's my annual take my dad on holiday week.

If I get a set of high back seat before then I might take the landy though.

Shame if you don't bring it, there's a whole network of cracking green lanes just round there!!! Me, Trew n Stumpy did em all a while back.

Absolute Tosh.
How do you come to that conclusion?
Why do a significant number of cars have a fan on the front of the radiator?

Prividing air passes through a radiator, it will transfer heat from the water to the air. It doesnt matter whether that air is pushed or pulled.

so you reckon on a 90 if you put a fan in front of the rad it will be effieceint enough to pass cool air thru the rad and then thu the cowling and still be cool enough when it reaches the engine?..i dont know of anyone whos installed a fan infront of the rad on a 90,im sure cars are different but the qs was regarding a landy

mine are going in front of the rad.

take the cowling off... why would you need to blow cool air over the engine? Isn't that the entire point of the WATER cooling system so you dont have to cool the air in the engine bay?

I cant see why you still need a cowl - it is placed there to assist the fan pull the air through, but if the fan is at the front, it becomes superflous. In fact , without the cowl, you will have greater air flow through the radiator without having the fan switched on. Most peeps that fit an electric fan find that it rarely is switched on.
I fitted a Pug 306 fan in front of the radiator on my series - and it performed admirably well, as does the Electric fan in front of the radiator on my discovery..

If you remove the cowling there will be less air being sucked through the intercooler. The problem with mounting the fan infront is the same you will not get much air being pulled through the intercooler. It will work and work well but you may loose some Oomph

I havent had a cowl on my 90 and I removed my fan in Salisbury but there was a reason LR used a Viscious fan and a cowling. It was to pull cool air through the rad and intercooler when travelling at low speed high revs off roading. I am trying to modify a cowling to mount my kenlowe in place of the old fan unit with an override switch to only turn it on when boosting and my performance switch is down Lol. Will let you know how I get on but its way down the list. Jai

If you remove the cowling there will be MORE air going through the radiator in normal use. I take the point about the cowl at low speed and high engine revs, but the point about an electric fan is that it is working at its omptimum all the time it is on, irrespective of engine speed. As for high engine speed, most of my green laning is done it low engine revs.
As for it must be right coz landrover designed it so- thats rubbish - there are tons of design errors on landrovers without even mentioning gaylanders. If they were perfect, why do we spend so much time and effort "improving" them?

well ok i take your point freelanders are crap! The ducting is just as important for the intercooler as the Rad although tdis rarely get hot in our country with our climate but what about in another country or towing? What if you fit a landrover factory winch in front of your rad? What about winching at tick over for prologed period of time like i see some electricity companys do every day? Landrover put the cowl and fan on so it can do its job. To keep the rad cool and the intercooler with enough air passing through it. Take the duct and fan off you may get more MPG and run a little hotter. You may even feel an improvement in performance at lower revs. I dont have a fan or duct but i can feel my engine holding back at higher revs vs another 200tdi. A degree in temp at the intercooler makes a huge difference thats why some high performance cars run a huge intercooler coupled with a spray mist as well as a dedicated fan pulling air through getting that air intake a few degrees lower giving them alot more oomph! Personally i like the idea of a lecky fan its great but i also want all the oomph i can lets face it its a waste otherwise to drag my heavy weight landy about it without adversly effecting its longevity. well if the fan is drawing air through the intercooler when you are boosting at low speed it should be good but will the fan even be switched on? And will it draw through the intercooler or from the general area behind the the rad/intercooler? Yes it will work it will be ok. i like to maximise efficiency thats all Jai
