Does anyone have a cunning way of holding the D2 tailgate open?
To be clear, this is not about the locks (mine work fine), nor do I think the strut at the bottom is malfunctioning, though it may not be as strong as it should be. It is just that with any right to left slope or wind, it will inevitably, and often annoyingly close.
We will be using ours for touring/overlanding and the tailgate needs to be stable when open. I would rather not have to plan on anchouring it open with rope and a tent peg if I can avoid it.

If replacing it would work I would happily do that, but £100 is a lot of money to spend on something that is probably no better than what I have already.
I guess the question is does everybody's tailgate swing shut, or does the strut hold them open against reasonable wind and slope?

My don’t, it stays put in both the postions what ever and it is 21+years old.
Perhaps your has been greased up and therefore to slippery to latch.

Sounds plausible. I'll try de-greasing the strut an see if that improves it at all. Bottom line though is that if the OEM strut in showroom condition does the job and prevents the door from closing inadvertently then I'll replace it.

I secondd discools suggestion. The check strap functions with a high pressure spring mechanism beneath the door and either yours is broken, worn or seized. Get down below the door and examine as you open and close slighly and the problem will be clearer I think.
