right i have just bought a 96 p38 2.5 DT for £400 it has five months MOT and tax on it but has a few niggles i need advice with

1) says select neutral even though it drives fine wont select sport and the bloke said since that happned there is no "tic toc" noise for the indicators either.

2) says sunroof is open when its not and when u open or shut drivers window it comes up with message

3) overheats when stood still guessing could be viscous fan kapooped.

and that is it think all in all it aint bad for the money drives nice done the 50 mile home no problems. obviously its not a patch on my dhse. here is pics

Sunroof and windows: with ignition in position II, open and close them fully, should clear the fault code.

I'd be concerned about the overheating - should be able to idle even without the fan! Easy to test it - get a rolled up newspaper and at idle, stick in in the fan - if it stops the fan when the engine is hot it's knackered, if it chews the paper up then it's all good!

As for the gearbox problem, no idea but has it had a flat battery or been stood for a while? P38's come up with all sorts of weird electrical problems if the battery is not tip-top!

yeah had to jump it as the battery was really drained. just thought if the overheating was the head gasket it would overheat driving it to. but only does it when ticking over

The viscous fan can fail either way , seized will run all time and chew up newspaper and you will hear it "wooshing" all the time and no overheating as the engine will run cooler.

It can also fail and not lock up at all and cause overheating problems at idle, the way to test this is let it idle and just before it gets into the red do the news paper test and it should chew it up, if it stops the fan then it's finbarred!

Overheating most likely the viscous fan, if you can stop it with a rolled up newspaper when hot it's faulty, not as said previously. If it makes a lot of noise when cold, the viscous has seized and it will not overheat. If it has aircon, I can give you a mod to use the aircon condensor fans for cooling.

I got that the wrong way round - oops! Edited to suit ;)

Will this mod work on an RRC? Could be useful in Morocco...

You shouldn't need it; the condenser fans should come on if the engine starts to get a bit warm. Check your fans work properly first then remove the viscous fan and let it idle for a bit. Once the temp gets up too much the condenser fans should kick in. I would strongly suggest that you flush the cooling system and remove the radiator and clean it - but give the rad a thorough visual inspection first (off the vehicle) look for damaged/corroded fins and any signs of leaks (green or blue snail trails!). BTW be very careful undoing the oil cooler pipes and take extra care not to clip the front of the water pump taking the rad out (and putting it back).

Know nowt about the classic, but on the P38 V8 the fans are supposed come on at high engine temperature so no mod necessary. The fans do not come on at high engine temperature on the diesel, that's why I created the mod.:)
