Hi there,

Just getting back home just now and noticed the temp running a tad higher than norm. Stopped at a local shop to get something and could not see anything leaking from below, but when I parked up at home the temp was even higher as I turned it off.

I popped the bonnet and straight away I could here a hissing sound coming from somewhere up front. I opened the water filler cap and it was half full but within 2 minutes that had drained out. Water had pooled up on the street roughly under the front end of the engine block.

As it was already night and not enough light I have left it till the morning to check under neath. She has never run hot and I don't go around thrashing the guts out of her.

Any idea what it might be? A burst hose, dead water pump (would that cause a leak?), etc?:confused:
 
Last thing you do with a overheated engine is remove the cap. Unless you are into being covered in boiling water and steam burns that is. :D
 
As it was not into the red and the cap I have seems to have a safety valve I was and am ok. Anyway, neither of those remarks are of much use are they, horses and stable doors and all that.

No good to you that's for sure, but there are other people who read these threads you know. Somebody may just have learned something that's going to save them pain. :););)
 
Split rad. It's happening a lot recently as I know. They are plastic on the top and flex with heating and cooling and then split with age.
 
In you profile days you have a diesel so if the rad hoses were leaking it be at the top and you would have seen that
I recently had a leak from the pipe under no6 injector! hard to see but its there
If its up front think you may be loosing from the pump

Nope, not that. I had enough light to check out the upper reaches. What's more the rad I have is only 3 years old, the old one blow it's head.

Also, I could not see nor feel any leaks on the hoses coming from the top of the rad which makes me think that the leak is coming from somewhere below.

No, if it is the pump, does it mean the pump itself has died or that a seal has gone. Either way, would getting a new pump be my best choice.

Could be the seal if you lucky could be the bearing if not! but have a search there not as expensive as you might think
I droped real lucky and got a new old stock on auction for £12 + post but buy it nows are quite reasonable

Yeah, if it is not a hose come loose, I hope it is just the pump gone. Checked out the prices already and not so bad for a new one over here, €41.00 + P&P (well at least not so bad for Portugal, usually they rip you off over here!)

This is why it's a good idea every now and again to have a quick check over pipes, etc in the engine bay for signs of leaks. I noticed the other week a pin hole leak from the metal heater return pipe but only when the engine was cooling down fro normal operating temperature. I replaced the pipe the other weekend but if I hadn't noticed and kept on driving who knows how long it would of lasted.........

I give the engine bay a good check over at least once a week. I spotted my water pump on the way out from the tiniest amount of coolant staining around the weep hole. You cant take chances especially with the cooling system.
 
I'd of thought it's best to refill the system, run the engine and carefully check where you are losing water; rather than ask hundreds of members for thousands of guesses.:confused::eek:
 
What mileage has your car done? (plastic) Water pumps and radiators seem to go about 90k ish. If there's water under the car it's not falling on something hot so should be pretty easy to find :)
Has it ever overheated? If not I think you can rule out head gasket failure
 
He said it was overheating. If the system is over pressurising then it would **** out of the overflow from the expansion tank first, and any weak points. We can only guess and guess and............:faint2:

It started to "heat" up 3 mins before stopping.

As for mileage, 198,200 (miles).

Nope, she has never over heated, in fact she's been ruddy great in that department.
