Eventually I want to do a series, or early 90/110, it would be a full job, possibly galvanised chassis.

Anyway what are the pros and cons on the different petrol engines

2286 3 bearing
2286 5 bearing
2495 5 bearing

Would it be worth tracking down a 2495?

Will want to run on unleaded and probably LPG.

Will want some sensible mods such as electronic ignition and possibly a compression ratio boost for efficiency (LPG loves it).

This would be a project and depends on what I find and what price.

I have built engines before so a full rebuild with rebore and the like holds no fears for me.

It's a case of continuous development AFAIK. The crankshaft was upgraded around 1980 from 3 to 5 main bearings, probably in anticipation of increasing the torque output.

2495cc engines will be unleaded-compatible from the factory and have a little more power- about on a par with the 19J turbodiesel. I'd say in a heavier 90/110 it's definitely worth looking for a 2.5.

If you're looking to make upgrades, it might be a better approach to look for one with an engine that needs work doing- the purchase price will be lower and you'll be taking it apart anyway.

I can recommend the Luminition optronic ignition for the 5 bearing, a nice big spark every time. I also fitted a Turner uprated head, stainless bigger bore exhaust and a K&N air filter to my 2.25 5 bearing. Definitely a bit more poke, although ultimately it is a 2 tonne brick! A 5 bearing in good fettle is a very quiet smooth motor, largely unstressed, and easy to work on.

I hear that the 2.5 is better as its more powerful. But as ever, buy on condition not spec unless theres something you really want.
To illustrate: In my youth wot I am still mis-spending, I once wanted as Alfa. Back then it was the 33 that was the affordable car. I looked at and drove a few, the 1.7s were the one to have. By far the best driving one of the lot was "only" a 1.5, that particular cars engine was great. Shame the rest was falling apart with rust. Ended up with a VW.

The extra power of a 2.5 will leave you looking for an overdrive. Even the 2.5 NA diesel will cruise at 50 all day - it's also worth thinking about, 30mpg is quite possible, which is nice...

I have a 3 bearing with a recon Turner head. Runs sweet as a nut. The 2.5 petrol would be a nice engine in a series. An overdrive will make a difference as well.
