Hi all, hope someone can help with a diagnostic

It's a 2007 2.4 defender 90. Was taking off from a set of lights big jolt and no drive. Tried in high 1,2,3 no movement. Tried low 1,2 nothing. Manged to drive off in high difflock.

I've had a look round the forum, broken half's shaft, gearbox, transfer box, drive flange all mentioned.
How can I check which is the cause of my problem?

Do you mean oil coming from the engine somehwere?

Do you have any tools?
If you have little rubber caps in the centre of wheels, prise them off (only pushed onto a lip), and look to see if the splines look ok, if 1 has gone it will all look a bit chewed up, then if you have a socket undo the 5 bolts holding the drive flange on, drive flange is the thing with the splines in it and is about 5" in diameter, if you get these out then pull the drive flange off, will probably be stuck on the gasket quite well may need to tap it generously to free it
 
Yea it was on the front right hand side if your area the front grille. It may or maybe not related to the loss of drive, been a while since I've looked under there.

I'll go have a look at the splines in the morning. If they are chewed up what part would that be?
 
If your lucky the shaft with the splines on is still ok, and that the splines in the drive flange are buggered, if so, clean it all up and buy a new drive flange, it would be worth looking at all the other flanges, at least the other one on the same axle as theory says it will be pretty equally worn.

It could of course be nothing to do with the flanges but seems to me the most likely reason of no drive, coming to a stop and then not going again

Had a similar problem once in my old RRC, that was a broken front diff pinion
shaft, used the same method to get home, i.e. engaged cdl.
But also more recently experienced the stripped out drive flange problem, as described by @Grem, with my mates County, one flange lh rear had stripped out, as @Grem said check all the others, we ended up replacing a full set as they all were razor thin and also ready to let go, not outrageously expensive.
 
Thanks for the info gazbo I'll check the flanges in the morning but if there good I'll know where to look next :)
 
Found this chewed up on offside rear. CoUldale this alone cause my loss of drive? If so that's pretty mad.

Yes thats gone, look at the other rear one and the fronts if your keen, then order 2 for the rears or 4 for every corner, make sure you order the right ones, then either get gaskets or a tube of gasket silicone of some description, I use granville high temp sillicone, comes in a pressurised can, just squeeze the lever and it oozes out
 
The nearside rear was fine but I'll order one for it anyway. Is it just a case of unbolt the old and slide on the new (with gasket) and does it need to be jacked up or can it be done whilst wheels on the ground?
The fronts were fine, bit of surface browning but all the splines were intact.

No need for jacking up, if the splines on the other corners are anything other than like new they'll pretty quickly go the same way, when they start to get sloppy they'll wear faster and faster
 
That'll be my job this week then :) I'll bear that in mind and check them often. Is it a good idea to grease them after the new ones are on before I put the cover on? If so what grease?

It's better than something deeper in the drivetrain failing.... the flanges are easy to fix, and about £20 each for genuine ( worth having IMHO ). As mentioned above, they will probably all be the same. (ish)

I always grease them well before fitting, and because I'm a perfectionist ( :rolleyes::D), I use castrol pyroplex blue - which is a very very good grease. IMHO use something very good - not just a "normal" basic lithium complex wheel bearing grease - which I don't even use in wheel bearings ..... Also put some grease in the dust caps which should keep water out - and stop the flange rusting to the half shaft if the dust cap gets damaged.... (you don't want that to happen!)
 
Replacing the old drive memeber and seen this. Guessing it's new half shaft time.

Any recommendations where to get them and what brand to go for? There pretty pricey so what would be good value for money ?
