hi guys i am new member to this form and new to freelander's

got my 04 td4 sport (107k miles, 18"LR rims) few days ago but starting to see few problems

done the VCU Torque test an it kept turning the other back wheel so wedged that and tried again and the Jeep tried to roll of the jack, i used big ratchet on wheel and my arm not the 8kg drum on stick.

mite try an get a video up on Utube of the VCU test and the td4 ticking over seems funny with a wee rev every 3 secs or so.

oh yes the IRD LEAKING OIL, f***ing drain plug was lose, fixed that but how much oil should be in it and how do i put oil in it.

seems to be alot of oil and soot around the front of engine so must take of the air manifold and egr an clean as i seen on this form is a good thing to do,

OH also what does the egr bypass kit do to MPG

cheers guys

Welcome,

Not sure about torque test as I hacen't done it on mine.

As for IRD it holds 1 litre of gear oil. The filler plug is top right of the IRD as you look at it from rear of the car. Make sure you can undo filler before you drain IRD as some users have reported filler plug seized and then you can't refill. Haynes says fill until it comes out of filler hole.

Best of luck

Hi Landbrocker, and welcome to LandyZone.

Do a search for the following regular expected problems at the age of your new machine.
(By the way may I suggest that you edit your post and remove the word J**p - or some folks will get the hump and you'll get few replies - it's a LandRover - not a f**king J**p)

EGR - which is exhaust gas recirculation. The by-pass does just that - stops the engine re-using its exhaust gases - EGR is not needed - de-activate it or better still by-pass it.

pcv - get the BMW Oil Separator update.

Turbo hoses - if you've oil leaks at the front it could well be leaky / split hoses - especially the 90 degree bend one on the right, or a hidden screw-head has worn a hole at the back of the long one on the left. Get someone to rev the engine to around 2500 - 2750 revs and check the hoses for splits that look like they were made with a Stanley knife.

The TD4 does not usually suffer from oil leaks - so get some engine cleaner and then you should be able to see where the oil is coming from.

Enjoy your new toy.

Singvogel.

she'll have a great set of lungs when they're cleaned out, good vacumn cleaner on the ports and mr muscle on the inlet manifold. Mine were just the same. Thank the euro emissions boffins for this..........

hi guys

cleaned out plastic maniflod, and done air, oil, bmw breather fliters ,new oil

cleaned the egr and all pipes

ran it for 500miles seems ok, no worse no better but i seen today that some new oil around the intercooler pipe on the top of engine that goes to the egr. took all off and fresh oil in side, is this normal??

why would there be oil in there, should it not be air at high pressure from turbo???

It's quite common to have a bit of oil in there, I can't remember why exactly.

If you have only a little bit don't worry at all.

Read up in the forums on bypassing the EGR or fitting a blanking mod. That'll make a difference in the end but did you get anywehere with those very crudded up inlet ports? I doubt you'll see much improvement till you can get that sorted.
