Just got a landrover defender and it fails to start

Old battery showed 11.9v and was 450 Amps, and AH of 60
New battery was bought off the shelf at halfords today, and is 12v, Startup Power: 500 Amps, AH Value: 56, Reserve Capacity: 105, Bench Charge: 6.0 Amps

that battery isn't really man enough. It sounds like an 075 (check the type number in the corner on the top). An 096 or 100 would be the smallest I would fit.

I tend to ues 019 or 020 batteries on my own landy although I currently use a yellow optima as my primary battery and have a red as a back up.

I'm thinking earths or starter, vehicle has been in storage for awhile, and when it did start up, It was just idle, didn't take it on a drive, so the alternator didn't really have time to do anything I think

sorry, the battery you got is crap. take it back and get a better rated one.

what you could do, is wire the new battery and old in parallel. so red to red , black to black and this will give you enough juice to test it. disconnect them when finished.

bit hard without jump leads, but maybe you have some wire or something to try it.

go make a list of kit you need. good amount of tools, jump leads, multimeter.

Thanks guys, will return the battery tomorrow, could possibly just get a charger instead and charge my old battery, i started it about 4 times fine, ran it for about 5 minutes each time

Then its no wonder its gave up the ghost lol,

Seriously though, in the cold, that ting battery wont start it,

you do seriously need at least 80 Ah and 600cca to be a reliable starter in the cold weather,

get them to test the battery when you take it back.

Halfords battery testers will usually show the capacity it should hold versus the capacity it is actually holding.

From memory the battery recommended for an older defender 2.5 n/a or 200tdi etc would be an 072 which I think will hold about 600 amps and 70ah.

I prefer to give my landy a fighting chance in winter hence uprating my battery. An 017, 019 or 020 can often be obtained online for around about £60 for a cheaper make or £85 for a well known make such as varta or exide.

Took the battery back to halfords and they ran a check on it, it was only outputting 120amps, instead of the 550, so they replaced, tried in the landy, fired up first time flawlessly in the freezing cold :D

Nice one.:)

Summit worth remembering is that just cos summit is noo it doesn't mean that it works. It's still worth your while checking the voltage is reading between 13.8 and 14.5 volts when the engine is running and there is no load applied just for peace of mind. ;)

Multi meter on the way :D

Make sure that you keep the receipt somewhere safe for the next 3 years.;)

Did you take the battery down to Halfords on its own or did you manage to get the vehicle started to drive it down?

I took just the battery down, and yeah, got it stored away safely :)

Got the landy going but its making well, a noise that I don't think is too normal, sort of a little rumble, is that normal or? Could take a video
