hi all just bought a 2002 model p38 4l hse on lpg great car everything works exept the cruise control. Couple of questions i have though its got 20 inch alloys on and i cant find any info about tyre pressures tyre sizes are 255 50 20 109v also where is the best place to get rubber mats and boot liner from?
 
General opinion is anything bigger than 18 inch it will handle **** and cruise control is normally split vac pipe
 
was thinking of putting it back on the original 16 inch alloys as im not too keen on them, the are original 20 inch alloys from land rover though. also did haynes do a manual for them?

LR only ever did 16" & 18" for the P38.
Look in the "How To" section at the top of the page, there is a link to a download for RAVE the LR service manual. Haynes never did one, the P38 is too complicated for them:rolleyes:

Se Wammers How To in the How To Section, there is a link to the RAVE manuals in there...

The 20" are probably from a RR Sport or L322....

EDIT: feck it, Datatek is getting quicker in replies!!
 
cheers for that i think ill be getting rid of the 20 inchers then what do people recommend 16s or 18s ill look for the download.

"Thank you for your email. Unfortunately we have no plans to cover at present. The vast majority of DIY owners have switched to the Discovery. The sales figures speak for themselves. Take 1999 for example:
Range Rover total: 3783

Discovery total: 11530.

The Discovery sold more than 3 times the volume which is why we have switched our efforts to the Discovery and also the Freelander. If you take into account the complexity of later Range Rover models (very DIY unfriendly in the electrical area) it adds to the reasons why we haven’t covered this model. It remains under consideration but we have no plans to publish in the immediate future.

16's give a better ride and the tyres a tad cheaper...

18's although standard fitment, do give a strange handling feeling if the pressures are not perfect...and the book pressures don't seem to give a good ride, hit and miss with pressures on the 18's is needed to get a good result...
 
well on that note saint i think ill go for the 16s like tyres that are a tad cheaper like the look of the hurricane wheels as well at least i think its them. i did hace a 3.9 classic about 10 years ago but the wife wanted one of those 2.5 diesel mitsubishi things god talk about a tractor it lasted 3 months in my ownership before it got sold!!
 
Congratulations on getting a p38. The cruise not working might just be a 10 mins fix. If you lift the bonnet and go round to the passenger side you will see the cruise control bellows attached to the air suspension box. Out of the bellows you will see some small diameter rubber pipe. This normally splits with age where it is pushed in and looses the vacuum needed to operate the cruise control. Just cut off a bit and push back on.

I have a Holland & Holland p38 on 18inch and its fine but my Dads p38 was on 16inch and I think, maybee??? just maybee had a better ride. Both 16 and 18 OK up to you. It's a fabulous ride whatever!!

Please, do let us know if my fix idea (and those in the future you will recieve from all the members) works as many on here don't bother to come back and report fixes.

thanks stopover ill have a look at that tomorrow we always wanted a p38 the one we have got has full service history with most of it main dealer then indy specialists. 120k on the clock and 3 owners from new leather is imaculate as is the body work. will post some pics when i get chance. going to have a ring round some breakers and that to see if i can get some sort of deal on the alloys i.e mine for theirs :)

If the 20" wheels are in good condition they are worth way more if you sell them as such, good nick you're looking upwards of £800. Four 16s can be had for about £150-200 with good tyres (is possible to get them for less than this if you look around).

16s are the way forwards, better all round and king off road. Also absorb more which only complements the air suspension. But if you drive it like you stole it, the smaller side wall of the 18s will be a better option. You have to take it easy on 16s as the sidewall flex does cause some interesting handling characteristics if you go into a corner a bit hot.
 
hi bix well thanks for that cos if i offered them for a swap at a breakers from what you have said they would snap my hand off i think as for speed not really interested in that i bought the rangie for comfort and ive got a motorbike for the speed thing:)
 
look for Hurricane or Comet alloys - fit with 255/55/18 XL

There are loads of the Hurricanes on ebay - the Comet's are nicer but much harder to come by as they were an expensive option even on the Vogue SE and Disco 2 ES7.

If they are hurricanes they only come in 18'. But if you've been finding the 20's running ok 18's should be fine.

This is only my personal opinion (before the 16' boys shoot me down in flames) but I think the 18' wheels come in designs that suit the P38 better and has been said plenty of hurricanes available and comets if you're prepared to wait. I picked up a set of 5 comets on ebay for my winter tyres for £114 recently, and they were in pretty good nick.
 
well when i took it for a test drive it was fine but that was on wide smooth roads at home is a different matter though cos we live in the countryside on narrow lanes and it handles like a bag of turds so the are definately going. also i like my cars to be original as possible. on the plus side i do like the air suspension and it holds its air over night as well. oh and i will pop back and let you all know if the fixes work i had a lot of experience working on the the rr classic and dont mind getting my hands dirty. got a good local indy as well.
