When I accelerate in any gear, the old gal belches black fumes...............
lots of it. :(
Now, there is no loss of power, everything is fine there. But it is fekin antisocial.
I`m told its `cos its running rich and just burning off excess fuel, so can I lean it of without affecting the running?

Is it worst off boost, clearing up as boost pressure increases?

Is the EGR valve still on ?
If so unplug the ecu under passenger seat and see if it still smokes.(assuming the ecu is in the same place as on a 98 300tdi)
If smoke stops-junk the valve

Ive turned the fuel pump up on my 300tdi and when i put my foot down it has alot of black smoke, i love it though. handy for when people are sitting up ya arse!! But if I drive it with out putting my foot down i dont have any..

Right Adz, no its all the way when accelerating with boost up to about 15-17 on gauge and doesnt stop `til I take my foot off the gas.
Oily olly...The EGR is blanked off,
and jamie, mine is just like yours BUT I dont like it , and would like to clean it up a bit if I can.
Anyone got any ideas ?

Turn the fueling down a bit sounds like it might be your best bet - when I first mucked about with the fueling on mine I turned it into a MkII Golf GTi eating monster, but it would use a tank of diesel in 200 miles and smoked like the bastard offspring of Bet Lynch and a cross channel ferry. On long drags up hill (Bluebell / Detling), it would pull an indicated 75-80mph and still accelerating, on 32" MTs before I lost bottle, and the best way to describe the smell would be "hot"... so I turned it back down again.

Since yours has a boost gauge it's a fair bet someone's mucked with it before, if it wasn't you it was the PO or one of his mates... it's pretty simple to check if it's been played with once you know what you're looking for. Does it seem a bit quicker than the average Defender?

15-17 psi on the gauge? If so then it's definitely been played with as a 200 should make no more than 12psi and a 300 15psi as stock. Increases to that just don't happen by accident or through wearing in. Leave the boost alone though... 17psi isn't going to hurt it, but excess fueling if it's over-done enough. Does it pass an MOT test with it smoking like that?

There's a few guides on tweaking the fuel pump of Tdi's about on the web - google is your friend there, you will decrease the max performance if you decrease the fueling, provided you do it sensibly it shouldn't detract from the driving experience much though ;)

Cheers,
