Hi all,

Just been told by my local garage that I've got a cracked cylinder head, about to phone around for prices, anyone know of a good land rover garage in the southeast cornwall / west devon area's

Cheers Paul :(

hi jpb i had the same thing it aint cheep the other option is to try a prouduct called steel seal around £30 a bottle you would need 3 bottles for the td5 they say 1 bottle per ltr if that dont work then look at the expensive option it worked on my lightweight and save me a fortune just put into search engine steel seal it comes in a bright green colour and the people who sell it are a great help too pete

Cheers Pete, had a quick look on google and it sounds like its better for petrols rather than a diesel with all the pressure involved. Just had one quote back £2500 using new cylinder head rather than recon which he didn't think are a good option. Oh well its only money !!!

had a few more quotes in £2500 , £2000 ,£1000 and £800. The £800 one is using a new cylinder head that was fitted to a disco and then a conrod went so its only done a 1000 miles.

As for doing it myself, I wish I could

Cheers Paul

Hello All!

I have a 2001 Discovery TD5 with 176,000 km on it.

I believe that it destroyed it's own cylinder head today. I'm just looking for confirmation that this is indeed the problem.

I drove the car around 40 mph and quite a bit of white smoke came out the back along with a knocking noise from the engine where for some reason the engine revved up by itself when I then shut it off.

Stopped, looked inside and found oil splattered about, but not really all that much.

I landed very fortunately on a family property and intend to go back shortly after the two of us have cooled off and check for oil in the coolant system and so on.

I concerned about this knocking sound it made... does that indicate serious damage to the cylinder wells?

Thanks all the same!
