Hi,
My 96 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 (it actually uses 97 factory parts) just shut
off on me while driving on the local road today. When I crank it it
does sound like it is going to catch - a couple of times it actually
catches for a couple of seconds then shuts off. We thought it was the
crankshaft position sensor and we changed that but we are still having
that issue. Until not this baby has given us no problems with starting
up. Does anyone have any ideas? :(

Thanks so much

A fuel pump gone South will do that to you. Cycle the key off an on
to see if you hear the pump running for a few seconds. If not, you
found the problem. If it then cranks and runs for your few seconds,
ditto. Check the pressure in the fuel rail.

I had that issue and mine was a rotten wire mesh cable between the
engine head and firewall.

TRY AN IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME ON TWO
DIFFERENT CARS, BOTH WERE THIS VALVE. IF THE ENGINE CRANKS AND YOU CAN
KEEP IT RUNNING BY HOLDING DOWN THE ACCELERATOR, THIS IS LIKELY YOUR
PROBLEM.

Is the fuel pump running? You should hear it every time you turn the
key on, for about 3 seconds.
