JATCO transmission Mystery??? Please help!

Yeah I'm also wondering if the fluid is low. The car shifts into reverse without a problem. I hope he didnt do this, I know he knows about it because he said it's why he was nervous about changing the ATF fluid in the first place.

I've been in touch thru email with Dave at Ashcroft. He's been out of the office and I probably should try him again and see if he's back.

Regarding the bang sound on gear change, some people mistake the rear differential center mount sound it does when failed with transmission issues.

Do you know if yours was changed? The rubber in the bushing of the mount always seems to goes after so many years in any Freelander I have read/heard about.

Yes I've had these mounts swapped out probably a year ago. This was precursor to me buying a rebuilt IRD and having that installed.
Same shop - different problem and another long story but I feel it's a prequel to my transmission going bad. Basically they refused to believe the IRD had gone bad, had me remove my lift kit, replace CV axles, Rear Diff Mounts and Engine Mounts and none of those fixed the problem. I just hope they really checked the VCU when I asked them to. It'll be the first thing I do when this transmission issue is sorted.
I don't think I'll be using this shop again.

Another possibility you don't want to think about:

Your replacement transmission has had its "wrong" screw removed, and then was taken out and thus why it is for sale.

So maybe two problems at the same time here. This wrong plug would not produce the error code about the intermediate speed sensor.


If the wrong plug was pulled, I just came across this possible way to fix it with the transmission still in car:

I'm back! I can't believe it! Swapped out the TCMs, which all of 5 minutes and it WORKED!!!! It drives great all things considering and shifts smoother than it has in a long time.

Land Rover must of used whatever Stockpile of JATCO transmissions they had in stock with the Intermediate Speed Sensor and then re-programmed the TCM unit to ignore data coming off of it.

There really is no documentation of this but I guess when they said that VIN# of the transmission would work with my car.... it was correct.

In retrospect I guess the shop was just on the cautious side once they saw missing pins on the external harness ( 16pins on the new transmission ) and with 18 on the old tranny.

I am so happy the guess was right, and I am especially grateful for all your expenses and time and letting us know what worked. This way we can learn from this!

You, my good sir, have the perfect attitude for landy ownership.
Most people I know don't invest as much time in their hippos so its nice to see someone stuck in the labour of love for a hippo.

Thanks guys.
Despite being the "red-headed stepchild" of Land Rovers I really do love it. The only thing I'd trade it for is a Defender.

And now after replacing the transmission it's practically a new car!
I've replaced the entire cooling system - TWICE!
New IRD, CVs, Engine Mounts, Rear Diff Mounts

I think the only thing I've given up on is the CD player working!
