Hi gents, back with the good news that the car is now working fine. Really smooth shifts and no locking up for nearly a week now. A total cost of around £325, well chuffed. Ended up changing the speed sensor and all the solenoids. Could have chanced it and just renewed the ones we thought were a bit iffy but 3 sols would have cost £150 plus vat whereas all nine only cost £250 plus vat. Bit of a con really but never mind. As to your question Hippo, how did we test the sols?, mmmmm not very scientific really:smash:, the first two we removed we took apart to have a look. Some slight scratching on the plungers but probably not enough to cause the problems we were experiencing. We found that you could suck and blow through the Neutral shift sol ( no spring inside ) and the plunger would move back and forward without sticking, The next one removed was Shift sol C, when we blew through it, it was stuck shut untill we gently poked a pop rivet in to the back which freed it off. After sucking and blowing for a while the sol stuck again. This happened several times over a short period of time, same thing with shift sol B. Also when we shook the sols you could hear the plungers moving in the cylinder then suddenly they stopped moving while still being shook then started moving again after a few more rigorous shakes. Probably bunged up with small particles of gearbox. Told you it wasnt very scientific. That was the point we decided on new solenoids and never to taste auto transmission oil again. As I said earlier the car is now changing gear really smoothly with no locking up.
