Hi I know what most will do with Jack placement when jacking , But it says in the manual to Jack under the spring mounts , How can you Jack under the spring and also place an axle stand in the same place , ?
 
Defender 300tdi , Bottle jacks and have a 2ton trolley , But manual says under the springs , But 2 into 1 won't go . Can't put stands where the jacks go . Surely as i intend to do is put stands on the axle and Jacks under the springs will be fine . Wont it ?

Yes, that’ll be fine. It’s a bit of a squeeze on the driver’s side because of the off-centre diff, but perfectly doable.
 
Why not just use the trolley jack on the diff housing and slot the axle stands in. As posted there's less space on the driver side due to offset diff.
 
Its worth a try , the trolley is only a 2 ton although ample i guess as i intend to drive the front onto wood blocks and will lift the rear , but what concerns me is its only got a flat pad to jack on the diff . The reason is that the two garage hard surface areas i have , don't have power and so will have to use a grassed area and the pavement to jack off , i must get a generator , At least i wont need to put sheets down for the mess .
 
Interesting questions...my bottle jack - the one I carry in the truck - is one of those with only the diameter of the column as a "pad". I rarely use it as a result cos I just imagine all that weight going through a small area is going to do damage, particularly on the diff case, and it looks like it can slip off very easily. I've been thinking about buying a secondhand Landy jack with the large "horns" on the top - more secure and spread the load more. Any opinions?
 
I had the same concern with the non-LR jack that came with my Disco and I ended up buying a genuine second hand LR jack with the wings on the top. I feel much more at ease using the proper one :)

Either get the proper one or be a pikey and cut the top off of a cheap axle stand and put that over your flat-topped jack.

You say "obviously"...my question related to the utility, or otherwise, of a jack with a small load-bearing area. If they are OK to use, don't slip and don't damage the surfaces they bear on, that's fine. Thought it worth airing my concerns....
 
Sorry i should of added my 3 bottle jacks are LR with the horns on top , i certainly would not risk a standard bottle round top type , shiver at the thought . I used the trolley on the diff and it lifted fairly straight and put the stands under and used the trolley under the axle to level up and raise the stand . I carry 2 bottles with me just to keep the bulk of stuff down .
 
Bloody jacks, I hate them. Over the years I've had a couple misadventures with jacks, including one time when I was jacking up the front of a double decker bus with a ten ton bottle jack when someone got in and drove it off the pit. The Jack ended up embedded in a brick wall. I use a 5 tonne trolley Jack for my landy and was confident in its abilities until I recently used it to take the weight of the front of my motorbike so that I could remove the wheel for a tyre replacement. It was left raised for a couple of days and when I went back in the garage to put the wheel back on, the Jack had lowered itself to the ground! I've been considering these airbag jacks, anyone tried them?
