Bronze green (gloss) would not normally have black on it, although individual units did strange things.

There are questions about the legality of displaying a Red Cross, if you look you will see that nowadays Ambulances do not.
Something to do with the Geneva convention. When we borrowed one as a safety vehicle in the TA (first 101 I drove when I did a fuel run in it, fantastic) we were told to keep the red cross covered otherwise we would be legally bound to stop if requested to help at an accident, and having done so could be in trouble if we didn't have a qualified first aider on board.
I've never heard of anyone being done for it though (although the Labour Party were for something similar a few years ago)
