It's time to say goodbye to my P38 :-(

I have a mate who has owned 2 passat tdi estates-last one wasa 55 plate with 100k on it- and gets around 50mpg generally and around 58-59mpg on a motorway run.Neither have broken down during his ownership and he rates them highly for comfort and noise level.

Nice one... They go for the same kind of money as a golf, lots more space, and not much worse fuel consumption. Passat just took the No 1 spot.... having said that, I'll prob change my mind 3 more times today, and settle on something completely different tomorrow...

Anybody got one they wanna swap for a P38? :D
 
I'll trade you a Rover 45 for those black modulars in your for sale thread. ;p
 
Nah, the lovely k-series. Like most things British, it is a ticking time bomb, yet the most innovative piece of engine design in decades.
 
Depends how big the tank is... not averse to getting a van and bolting some seats into the back...

Around 70 litres cost me 86 quid from the red shell @ 144 before you get too excited iv had it 3 years from 40k to present 251 k one new clutch and alternater 3 belts later and all Receipts v Reliable

Hey, that is mean. My 1.8D Escort van went like stink. I adjusted the fuel pump slightly to squeeze out a little more poke, changed the throttle control valve so it was more responsive. Sure it was never going to be rocket ship fast, but she did well for a N/A. Could easily break traction with Toyo Proxies fitted. But then I did build it to go around corners at speed, not down a straight road. If I had the windows open it topped out at 72mph.

But that would get 300 miles to 35 litres. So not too shabby.
 
You're still going to struggle to get a good VAG car for 2k. I'd rather buy a much newer car with less badge cache. 2k would buy a mint citroen c3 1:4 hdi punchy refined and 60mpg.

I's 'ad one of them... awesome it was. Not very well built, but went like buggery and still got 40mpg... not very comfy on long trips, mind, they're a bit basic inside...

Told yer, I likes quirky, I do...

Besides, I'm very skeptical of the mileage claims of these small diesels... they may well be capable of making their quoted mpg figures... on the flat, in perfect unaccelerated, constant-speed driving... however, in the real world they can't get anywhere near those figures. You don't get 95bhp out of a 1.3 diesel engine without a sh*tload of boost... our Corsa runs 20psi of boost, and the second you even breathe on the throttle to think about accelerating, the mpg drops right off. Figures say it should average 85mpg on the combined cycle... we are lucky, in real life driving, to get 55mpg as an average...
