The disco 200 tdi is now in the engine bay of my previously petrol powered defender.

POI for anyone thinking of putting a disco lump in their defender, a 10mm tap is useful. If you tap all the blank holes in the disco flywheel housing, then most, possibly all of the bolt holes from the bellhousing will line up happily.

Engine crane wasn't quite ' reachy' enough, so once in the bay, we dropped the motor onto a block of wood on a trolley jack, whilst still connected to the crane (With a bit of wriggle room on the strop) and it went on within 15 minutes, without any great difficulty.

More updates when it lives.

if just swap the flywheel housings over then the flywheel housing to gearbox hole WILL all line up

Arr yes, but mine was a 2.5 petrol flywheel housing, and the TDi flywheel was too big, so I'd have had to fit the considerably lighter petrol flywheel, leading to possible tickover problems, and a definite starter motor issue. DOn't know if all the 2.5 petrols are the same, mine was a liveridge bitsa special.

An 8.5 mm drill down all the blank holes, followed by a 10mm tap, (There are 4 or 5 to do, a couple of minutes each, and you won't have to undo the flywheel, starter motor, and housing.

could be a bit light,a touch extra rpm on tick will suffice.

Ah well, you live and learn. Then you die and forget it all. I did give my arse a mighty bruise when my feet slipped off the axle and steering drag link, while I was fettling the engine bay, and landed square on the steering box.

Anyone seen raiders of the lost ark, well, my arse is like that german blokes burnt hand. If you need a schematic of the top of a manual steering box, i'm your man.
