Some of that is very true, but if they do not co-operate, warn them you will have it fixed and send the bill, then you have the car and a chance of being paid with court action, usually worked for me, however I'd never buy from one of these small traders, I prefer to buy privately these days
 
They aren't a main dealer but neither are they trading from a portacabin and a small forecourt. It is a quite large showroom with plenty of high end £20k plus cars so I'm expecting at least a professional response and not one I would expect from a 1 man band cowboy.
If they make an offer, bonus for me, if not, I'm not massively out of pocket although thanks for the suggestion of a local indy who can maybe get a list going for me to go to the dealer with (start up rattle).

Thats good advice, the person i know had bought a VW golf and the gearbox failed and he couldnt fix it himself or afford for somebody else to do it and it dragged on for months and eventually got settled in court.

Hopefully if it's a decent size business with a reputation to protect you will be ok. the positive polite approach is always a good place to start and if they dont cooperate, release the hounds..

The start up rattle could be pretty involved as i am sure you have googled already.

Had much experience with the French ? At worst the RR will come back even more faulty and missing your CD's

The local indies are brilliant and unlike English garages, honest. However they are often reluctant to touch a P38 unless it's something mechanical like ball joints etc.
Plenty examples of RR's coming back from UK garages with more faults than they went in for posted on LZ.:p
 
i am in derby to and i learned a lesson when i bought a car from a dealer in cannock, i had only had it one day and the auto gearbox packed up, i had to pay a recovery truck £100, to take the car back to the dealer, who refused to give me my money back he said he would have a go at repairing it, i said no and decided to have a different car from him about the same price, he was happy with that, but that turned out to be faulty in the end
 
Quick update. Phoned the dealer who said without hesitation that I can Either take the car to a local garage for an assessment or they will come and recover it and have it looked at by a land rover specialist who they use so all the issues I have can be looked at to see where we go from here.
Rejecting the car isn't what I want to do and as I mentioned, I would repair the car myself at my cost if needed but figured there's no harm in seeing if it can be fixed by them.
I'm sure there'll be another update soon enough.
 
Update:
Spoke too soon.......kind of.
Spoke to the mechanic today who said they've given the go ahead for all the repairs EXCEPT the alternator, apparently it is a wear and tear item although he said he can save me some labour while the engine is in bits and fit one for £100 if I supply the alternator.
Result? I suppose so but I only wanted the alternator doing lol

Just sounds like he is charging you £100 to fit an alternator that you are going to pay for and make out he is doing you a favour.

Have you found the price of an alternator yet ?

Its just a cop out i'm afraid, not sure where you stand regarding wear and tear as anything could be classed as that like if the pistons had dropped out the crankcase he could claim wear and tear.
 
While it was in I decided I'd point out a few other niggles so the other repairs are timing chain tensioner, lower forward control arm, pcv valve and a wheel bearing. I've had a search on Google and it seems to common practice that an alternator gets put into the fair wear and tear category.
The Alternatorman on ebay seems to be ok going off a few posts on here and he wants £144 for an alternator.

It knocks on startup when it's cold or been left for an hour or so. I read up on the cause and timing chain seemed the most popular so I mentioned it to the mechanic and he's gonna fit a tensioner to see if it cures it
 
Most of the 4.4 engines do it, I have a tensioner waiting to go in but could be the non return valve behind the vanos solenoids or the actual vanos units need replacing or rebuilding which is a big expensive job.
Hope the tensioner works as it will encourage me to do mine
Have a google of Beisan systems M62 procedure
 
I've got an M5 (S62 V8 engine, twin vanos) as well which has a bit of a vanos rattle occasionally and it's a different sound. The Range Rover sounds more like a knock and not a rumble which is how the M5 sounds plus, I don't think my Range Rover has vanos which would rule that out haha.
 
i wish the M5 engine would work in the l322.
i am afraid you have just as many vanos in your range rover as you do in your M5:)
