My old discovery 300 tdi doesn't like the cold. For the first minute or two after waking up, she makes all sorts of knocks, bangs and rattles. Creeks, groans and seems stiff all over, to say nothing of being extremely sluggish. But after a few hundred yards, she rubs the sleep out of her eyes and starts loosening up. After the first mile, she's starting to get into her stride and after three, when she's all warmed up, she's positively slick. Well, as slick as a Land Rover can be, I suppose!

Are they all like that?

Let the glow plugs do their job. Don't just start it when the dash light goes out. Wait 5 more seconds (just cos the dash light is out, doesn't mean the glow plugs aren't still heating) and then put your foot to the floor and THEN start it. That is how we start mine and my G/F's 300 discos, and its not got any "sleep" left in it afterward. Off like a shot, both of them! Hope that helps.

I`ve had an old rubber floor mat clipped onto the slam panel with one of the plastic grill screws all winter.
it dont make it start any better, as it does that thing easily, but it keeps the airflow down going through the rad, thus making it run warmer.
got nice an hot today, but still just under halfway on the temp guage.
runs like a sewing machine when hot, no clonks knocks or rattles.

I`ve got a new thermastat still in its plastic bag, still waiting to be fitted..

been waiting to be fitted for bloody months now.
If It aint broke - dont fix it eh :)

I hope theres a decent flow of air THROUGH that mat...i put one on and blew the headgasket!!

nope....:crazy_driver:

but think, the size of a rubber floor mat is less square that the middle section of a disco grill..
oh , just thought, I still also got half the rad covered wiv my "winter cardboard rad cover"

while the winter blues are here, it all stays on...;)

truthfully, I dont go very far at any time, so its just fine for meself,
though my temp guage works well..

But new thermostat in my 300 and it didn't make any difference so I blanked the nearside half of the rad off with cardboard, could do with one of the old type slatted blinds that open via a bi metal strip when the rad gets warm, dont make em like they used to:D
