Anyone know if there are issues with electrics when fitting a non-LR towbar to a 2005 Freelander. Can you just crimp into the existing wiring and does this effect warning lights etc.

Hi IrFLander,

I had a nonLR towbar installed a couple of years back and the guy just took most of the wires behind the red plastic rearlights stuff (left and right), he took these blue connectors with a kind of a knife inside to put his new wires, have never had any problems nor dash warning lights coming up. Good luck.

Why muck about cutting and crimping wires when a socket with electrics is about £12.00 and has a plug in the boot were it just plugs in, cutting and joining surely a thing of the past! ;-) tiga

Thanks Guys,
Its just that I rang a company that fits towbars which I have used before and found them good. I is a non LR towbar they use which they said would need a visible cut in the rear bumper. Well that put me off for starts, my new "Landy" God forbid! When I asked if the Trailer light warning system which I believe exists in the Freelander would work, The price went up by another €100+ and there was talk about all the extra wiring and bypass systems that had to be done.
So I thought, why not fit it myself, one that dosn't need the bumper cut for a start.

Hi tiga,

Thanks for the info., this will surely be of great help for owners thinking of installing a towbar in the future, but as I said mine is done a couple of years already plus all these details are not so commonly known in Belgium compared to the UK where everything related to LR (British cars in general) is known widely. If I would have known the existence of such a socket I certainly would have taken such one rather than to have the original wires cut/joined. Ciao.

Guys,
I have just fitted a LR towbar, no problem easy to fit etc, electrics plug in, however there is a relay supplied in the kit with unclear instructions of where to fit in the fuseboard. All the relay positions are already populated so do I remove an existing relay and replace with the one supplied in the towbar kit. If so which one?

Thanks for help

Hi The Relay You Are Looking For Is Located Inside Drivers Fuse Box Its The One On The Far Right, just Remove Black Relay And Fit New 1 In Its Place Its A Bit Tight As Bigger But All It Does Is Flash Your Trailer Warning Light In Instrument Pack When Trailer Attached, hope This Helps Tiga.

Tigapiglet,
Yeah, had a look earlier and figured it out, its flasher unit. swaped it outand checked it that flashers on freelander wer working and then tried trailer and bingo, as you said you get an indicator on dash that trailer lights are working.

Thanks for reply

Hi all,

Can any one tell me if I can fit a 12s aux socket kit stright on to my P38a Rangie (1996 TD)and plug into the what looks like a spare socket in the nearside rear light access hatch, and are there any additional relays to be changed/fitted so I can safely run my newly accuired caravan fridge whilst in transit. (00.01hrs to 00.05hrs ov course) and whilst the sprogs are sleeping.. .
The RR has the normal 12n socket and this works perfectly.
Yours Mike K.;)

Where do I find this plug, and where sells the LR for £12, surely LR themselves won't be selling for such a reasonable price. - freddy

Hum well i went through the crimp it on as i had a bleep relay for indicators bought whole lot from ebay [towequipe] all very good but if i had to do it again would buy the l r connector like Tiga says. . .:)

Hi the single lead for electrics at landrover is £13.26 , twin electrics for pre 96 is £110.00 and post 1999 is £60.00,these are plus vat,i can get 15% off but obviously you will have postage costs so if you a near a main dealer it will work out cheaper to pop in yourself, tiga
