Hi all,
I want to do an oil and filter change on my 2001 2.5 td range rover so I went to get the parts needed from my local landy specialist and he says it needs fully synthetic 5w30 oil in it.Is this right ?I want to make sure I put the right oil in the motor,other people have said 10w40 semi synthetic or 10w40 fully synthetic so its getting abit confusing.
Any advice much appreciated.

I just put 10w40 in mine. The important thing to look out for is the ACEA specification - should be A3 or B3 for the correct viscosity.

Fully synthetic oil is designed for long service intervals 12,000 miles between changes. In my opinion no diesel engine should be left that long between changes. So the price of it cannot be justified. Using standard mineral oil or maybe a semi synthetic brand and changing it more often, say 3,000-4,000 intervals will see your engine lasting far longer. From the Land Rover application chart the best all round oil to use in all climatic conditions is in 5W40/5W50 range. But here i would use 10W40. Or 10W50 in an high miler. In a diesel changing the oil and filter more often is more important than using really not needed, seriously expensive lubricant.
 
I thought on diesel you were meant to put semi synthetic in (for years I was putting fully sync in) and the cost it just crazy, but i can get the stuff from work now for free, and that's a big help when your using 2 cans of the stuff
 
I use 10W40 semi and its fine but years ago when I had an Omega (same engine) manual recommended 5W30 synthetic, up to you. I just use any 10W40 semi thats on offer and change it every 3K miles.

not necessarily ,most engines will run happily on a big variation of oils ,synthetics are used to prolong change intervals but that is market driven not for the good of engine ,i myself prefer mineral or semi and frequent changes as removing contamients to me is probably more important than it is to others,ive seem more damage by lack of changes than by using "wrong"oil
 
I know I keep posting it, but bargains should be well advertised. Homestore chain "The Range" sell Unipart branded oil, 5 litres of semi-synth for £14.99, fully-synth for £19.99. That's for 5 litres - not the 4 litre packs most come in now. I agree with the comment above, with a diesel I'd buy semi and change it twice as often, that'll be £30 for the 9 litres required by the 2.5 - bargain. They also sell 1 litre top-up bottles for £2.99 or £3.99. That's cheaper than I can buy Comma or CarLube trade.

They also sell Ford, VW 505 and 507 spec oil for the same price points depending on the store in question.

Are you kidding me John. Have you seen some of the spotty scroats behind the parts counter in the dealers and parts outlets these days. They are shop assistants not qualified to give advice. There are a few very qualified people on here. :):)
 
When you read it fast (our fault) looks like there's very few qualified people here

But then again, your not wrong there either!!!
