Why do they keep putting these stupid mini roundabouts at t junctions? They are everywhere around here.

Col
Cos the council feel they have to employ some knob with a univeristy degree in traffic calming - and the knob feels he has to do something to make it look like he's worth his pay packet. He also has a budget in white paint he has to use or he won't get it again next year.

Agreed they are a PITA - but luckily we don't have to many here in Christchurch, that doesn't stop the council doing stupid stuff though.

There's a junction here in Chch where the main road I use to go into town (Riccarton Road) crosses another road (Deans Ave) before going through the main park in town. I've never had any issues at the junction, was a good junction - funnily enough it was a roundabout, but a big one. The bloody council bods must have spent a fortune on feasibility studies, impact studies, modeling blah blah - and they've replaced it with a 6 way traffic light system complete with priority bus lanes and cycle lanes. I'm sure the uni knob filled his tissue when he designed it - but its horrible - you always get stuck at it now and people are confused by it.

There is a junction near me that changed from a roundabout to traffic lights, I waited four minutes the other day and traffic was light, just sit wasting fuel and time

The paint blobs help traffic flow. It means yer give way to the right. If everyone does it then traffic flows from all links to the island reasonably evenly.

It's not about using up paint budgets. It's about keeping traffic flowing fairly from all links.

I've noticed over the last few years that people don't seem to know how to use mini roundabouts. This just causes everyone to stop and give way to which ever direction they feel is right. Or people don't stop and simply pull out in front, when you're turning right. I'm sure these are the same people who insist on driving in lane 2 of the motorway, when lane 1 is completely empty.

Funny yer should say that. I too have noticed peeps are more wary of the paint blobs and often give way when it's their turn to move. Being in a bigger vehicle may add to me being given way to more often. Delivery drivers give way a lot too. I think this is due to the size of van and exits are close to peeps entering from the same direction they're going. Due to the size of rhe blob islands I think peeps tend to treat them as a one at a time roundabout. Bit to easy to have a bump on them with so many close connections and vehicles moving int different directions.
