Is there such a thing as a 'slightly' raised air intake?!

A couple of times a month I need to cross a ford a couple of times (out and back). At this time of the year it only reaches about 60-70% up the wheel, so no biggy, but at the back end of the year it can comfortably cover the tyre.

My old (stolen) ex Mod V8 had a raised intake / wading kit and of course no side intake, but I'm about to pick up a 300tdi and it's made me wonder...

I don't particularly want to fit a full 'snorkel', not least of all because I occasionally have to squeeze in under a height restriction at work, so is there a halfway house solution? I wouldn't cross if it was anywhere near bonnet depth, and I don't want to go swimming with it, but I could do without it taking a mouthful! I'll extend the breather pipes anyway, possibly bringing them inside of I have to, but is there a wing-top solution out there?

Or should I just use the main road and do an extra 14 miles each time?!

Just get a snorkle top , like this
Ram 3.5'' safari style snorkel top Great quality, lldpe very strong | eBay

then a ali pipe welded into a plate cut to fit the wing top blank and connect your air intake to that , it will only be a foot or so above your wing top, and you will see when the level is getting near to swamping it .

Aye that could work! I'm no welder sadly but that could well be an option. Surprised there isn't a wing top alternative off the shelf bit I guess it's just me!

How high is your tire? I've had water over the bonnet without a snorkel briefly without issue - I've also blown up fender using water....Anyway is there a depth marker?

Will check the height but it tends to be just below the top of the wheel arch in winter, so not far from the bottom of the side intake... I wondered if there was something useful for the wing-top that would just raise the intake above the bonnet by a couple of inches without doing the whole 9 yards

There isnt that's why I suggested what I did. Be warned check that the duckbill on the bottom of the oe intake system is in very good condition , or better still blank off , and do a stall suction test on the whole system when you get it set up. Also take note Landrovers are not submarines, and you need to check all oils in drivetrain after immersion , water contamination can cause a lot of damage in a very short time.

That's what I would do or just buy some ducting the right size and attach it to the air box when needed and run it through the vent hole on the top of the wing for when it's needed in winter and remove it when not,

I have seen half snorkels on work (military) vehicles. So they must be in circulation somewhere.

I thought so too Laracroft. Thanks for the ideas Tacr2man and Warrior - comment on oils duly noted too. I guess I really ought to put wading plugs in each time as well but we all know how practical that is...

You don't need to cut the mantec ones. You can set it up so its just below the height of the highest part of the roof.

I used one of the MOD style snorkels with the mushroom top, but I cut 2" off the pipe lowered it and fitted a Safari style head. No higher than my roll cage now and much less likely to bloody loose it!

I mainly cut mine so it sat inside the roll cage a bit more, stop me loosing it! But yeah your right you can mount them lower!

You can leave the wading plugs in all the time - just remove periodically to release any oil.

I thought a slightly raised intake was what was fitted to a Renault Espace. About 6 inches off the ground!!.
