Some waffle about self centring steering.
Landy steering is power assisted as opposed to true powered steering. The pump system helps turn the steering, rather than directly driving/powering the steering. The hydrolic pressure is only maintained while the steering is turning, and when it stops turning (regardless of angle/position) the pressure releases and no longer tries to turn the steering.
Powered steering works under constant pressure with a neutral balanced spot at the central (straight) position, so when you turn the steering you are partly turning against some hydrolic pressure and when the steering wheel is released this pressure takes it back to the central position.:blabla:
An advantage of the Land Rover style steering is that if the hydrolics fail (like a split pipe) you can still steer because it's mechanical at heart. Although it will be bloody heavy.:crazy_driver:
