Is my diff scrap?

Well I suppose it was inevitable! All parts cleaned, garage properly tidied for the first time in 3 years, and lots of new parts purchased ready to be fitted. Start on the front axle I thought. Forgot to buy the bronze bush and stub axle seal. I'll get them this week.

How about fitting the diff to the axle I mused. All cleaned out inside, cleaned outside and painted. In all that time I failed to notice the diff cross shaft was in two parts! Its not been a good day. Its a standard 90 front diff.

I've found a place that will sell me a shaft. However, two questions please.

a) if that shaft is snapped does it mean that the diff has taken a pounding and should be replaced anyway? Crown and pinion wheels show no signs of wear and the bearings and seals seem fine.

b) what sort of job is it to replace the cross shaft. It looks like the crown wheel would have to come out and the crown wheel unbolted from the carrier, shaft replaced and all bolted back together. I've read a lot though about these being tricky to work on and reading the manual there seem to be a lot of floats and preloads etc that need to be spot on. I'm pretty competent generally I think but not worked on a diff before.

For some Reason peops on here are reluctant to help when a search might bring up the answer. TBH i think that forums would grind to a halt if people didnt ask the same q,s over and over again and generally i would be willing to answer. However my knowledge is minimal so lets hope someone else answers

Are the gears siezed on the shaft or has some maniac tried to belt out a broken half shaft??

Diffs aint hard at all take the coont to bits, 4 big bolts and lift the crown wheel out, aint done a landie one but there should be adjustment on each bearing, mark the position and fit it back to that position with a bit of preload like a taper bearing in a hub. Get some gold grease coat the gear and note where the contact patch is, by moving the crown wheel to or away you will give it backlash, you want a little bit of play don't take it up tight. usually a couple of circlips hold the shaft in.

Leave the pinion in, some of them have a collapsable spacer.
 
I think I'm the first to find it. Gears still move freely on the shaft. I only found it as I was giving it a final clean and one end of the cross shaft dropped against the crown wheel! One circlip at each end - of course not doing a lot when its got a break in the middle.

Sounds like I should give it a whirl then...

Anyone know whether this is a common problem, or does it signify a diff that's had a tough life? I'm building up from the ground so while I'd rather not buy another one, if it needs it I will.
