i have been thinking about changing my 300tdi 90 for a td5 now my 90 is not a mint exsample its not a shed tho just a few dinks here and there not bad at all for its age only done 120,000 miles inside seats are like new.

i dont use it evey day as i have a work van and my other half has a impreza sti that she uses, we go camping walking the dog and green laneing, i want to pay and play but never managed to get the time.

i have been looking at 2002 or newer with the newer dash is it worth it?

I would say no stick with what you have, better the devil you know.

We run a TD5 and though everyone says it's too modern and complicated, found it to be an excellent engine. It's highly tuneable, more powerful and economical than the 300TDI and surprisingly refined for a Land Rover engine.

Only you can answer if its worth it or not.

As for others... well you'll get all the old stick in the muds whinging and whining about the Td5 and how much better the Tdi is.

Truth be told it comes down to this:

-Both vehicles as a whole are almost identical
-The newer dash isn't really that new, just more plasticky looking with less usable storage space
-Td5 might have air con which you might like
-Td5 is quiteter and smoother
-Td5 makes a better noise
-Td5 is more powerful stock (although stock tune is ****e)
-Td5 more tunable
-Td5 might have TCS, which if you do off road can make a huge difference
-Some Td5's (forget which year) have a better designed door top frame and seals
-a Td5 will be newer

-arguably Td5's body panels are thinner, always look more flimsy
-it won't actually be hugely faster to drive or better
-it won't ride any better
-it won't be any better off road bar the optional TCS system
-it's not going to be built any better or rust any less

It's really very much the same, but slightly different

If you want to change to get a newer, less miles tidier 90, then it makes sense.

If you want to change to get the Td5, then it makes sense.

If you want to change to get TCS, then it makes sense.

However if you want to change because you think it'll be a night and day difference then you'll be disappointed.

Arguably the amount of money it'll cost you to upgrade to a Td5 you could spend on the Tdi (or a lesser amount) and probably dramatically change the vehicle.

The only real difference is going to be HP and refinement. A Tdi will never return the same horse power as a tuned Td5 and the Td5 will always sound better and be smoother and more refined.

TCS isn't something you can retro fit to a Tdi either (well ok you can, but not really worth it). But you can buy lockers or a similar if you wanted too.

if your one has a few dinks etc and you want to pay and play off road...surely it makes sense to keep your one, which you wont mind more dinks/scratches etc , rather than batter about a newer one ...

i agree with the better the devil you know, ok i have had a few bit well maybe one a month break but i expected that when i bought a 14 year old landrover, and i dont want a mint exsample as i might cry as i scrape past a bush or tree,

as for power i have tuned a 106 rallye 1.6 to the limits of a na engine then got bord so baught an evo 7 making 315bhp and got board and sold it and decided i wanted to go anywhere and was willing to sacrifce speed for this so i bought my landy,

think ill b sticking with my 300

I have a td5 mate and its not that refined but its my 1st land rover and iv never driven a 300tdi to compare! I miss my speed to though i moved from a tuned magazine featured cooper S :(

I found the as the engines got newer they got less economical ie 200 300 td5

Are you aware that the 300tdi (even more so the 200tdi) has the potential to run rings around the TD5 engine when they are setup correctly? Protection & Performance have a 200tdi which has been meticulously tuned to the extent that it can leave a TD5 alive Defender in the dust ;) (it's been witnessed at York Drag Strip). TD5's have plenty of low down grunt at stock and they will certainly pull better than a 300tdi out of the factory but the wrong mod can make them exceptionally numb at lower revs for the sake of a greater top speed.

HP vs HP and torque vs torque the old Tdi will get it's arse handed every time.

The only exceptions are:

1. The Tdi is more modded by a significant amount then the Td5 (or the Td5 is stock)
2. Some **** poor tuning on the Td5
3. Something is broken
4. Driver

You'll never get speed the same, what you need to do is get sense of occasion. Too many people worry about out and out pace.

Personally I'd look at doing these:

-remap, the stock Td5 tune, especially in a Defender is rather poo
-Nice exhaust, the Inline 5 actually makes a wonder noise once released
-1-2" suspension lift
-Big ass tyres, some 33's maybe

It won't handle great and while it'll have more power the bigger wheels will blunt performance. But what it will do is feel like a great dirty tonka toy!! It'll be something that'll make you smile and actually drive well too.

But most of all, it'll offer huge sense of occasion.

bhp and torque and 0-60 is small talk for the pub if you carnt drive it then its usless.

Umm, except that's all rather bollox though. A faster vehicle is a faster vehicle period! Even more so when it's the same friggin driver!!!

What are you talking about???????? This was compaing a TD5 to a Tdi not differnt types of vehicles on a friggin track while pretending to be the Stig

wait till it snows , then see whats fastest :D

i only bought my landy in march so aint snowed yet, on the other hand i have hurd the dont stop to well.

as for the above comment miss inturpreted what was said and went off topic,

all the cars i have owned there is always banta about engines

i think it all boiles down to who has the biggest buget to who has the fastest.
