It is I suppose possible that the operating linkage has come adrift. Thanks Datatek .. thats my thoughts on the garage also .... And thats before it has even been near the diagnostic computer !!!!!!
I have been looking though all sorts and found a post that says it could be the selector pin ? ...
Any thoughts on that ?
Don't get your hopes up I'm sure a garage would know what a sloppy gear selector would feel like , really loose .
They are also pretty good at detecting a loose wallet
Well I got a call just before they closed ... The diagnostic machine for Land rovers didn't pick up anything until they tried to look at the gearbox ..... and it crashed the computer ....TWICE ... LOL
So they couldn't say for sure that there isn't a electronic problem.
But they have agreed with me that they have no idea how this could happen ..... and that there should be a 'feeling' for each gear notch as you go into them ie D , N , R etc but there is nothing ( if that makes sense )

you see stuff like that now ,where everyones thinking about the system no one looks at the simple ,what would your thought be if you couldnt feel detentsGear linkage has come apart.

So are you thinking selector pin ??
Which was my thoughts earlier in the post
Not so, it could have left the box in partly gear, clutch not fully engaged, but as you can still more the lever the park or neutral contacts could be operated. However the fact that it moves could still mean it's something more serious, but you still need the electronics to engage a gear even if the forward clutch is engaged.I don't see what the gearbox that has a selector gone, that would have to be stuck in park or neutral for the car to turn over and start , would make the car only crawl at 2000 or more revs as in first post if its in gear broke you can't start car or if it broke say in neutral it won't go in gear and crawl
