P38A Is it time to jump to LPG ? (4.6l Gems)

No there is no real point anymore, supply is nearly non existent and as said above they are discontinuing it as a fuel anyway..

You'd be better off pumping that £2000 in to the petrol tank ;) or buying something more economical as daily transport. :)
 
I think you're being a bit optimistic about a gallon of LPG only doing two miles less than a gallon of petrol.

IME of a 3.5EFi Classic converted over 20 years ago & currently running on a BLOS I have always returned roughly 13 ish mpg on LPG.
So if we take the cost of a litre of petrol as £2 then that gives a gallon of petrol at 4.54 x £2 so that's £9.08 a gallon.
At 70ppl a gallon of LPG is still £3.17,
So with those figures for the current cost of a gallon of petrol I should expect to get about 37 miles on LPG.

Before all this silliness started I got about 2 gallons of LPG for the cost of a gallon of petrol so that would have been around 26 miles.
Does that even when fully loaded & towing the boat.

Some insurance companies won't touch them at all & those that do you may find you are paying more than an unconverted car.

Shell stopped doing LPG at all of their forecourts a couple of years ago & it is getting harder to find.
That's the problem.
I'm fortunate in that currently I have 2 within 5 miles of my h/a.
There were 3 but one was Shell.

If you go into Europe on holiday you can't use the Channel Tunnel.

I must admit, I had toyed with the idea of taking the LPG off mine as the insurance would be considerably cheaper but I'm currently glad that I didn't.

I was getting about 25% less mpg on lpg compared to petrol. My insurance was £55 more. The thing I hated was the time it took to refill. If I passed a certain vehicle just as I pulled in to the sevices to fill up, I didnt catch it up again until about another hundred miles.

LPG might be disappearing from fuel stations but there are still plenty of homes reliant on LPG for gas central heating so I can't see a problem sourcing supplies if you have your own tank installed.

Happily the alternative for those of us in France is to use E85 (85% bioethanol) which at my local service station costs 81c/L. As with LPG the calorific value is less so fuel consumption is higher but at 15mpg vs E10 at 18mpg & a cost €2.07 I am still quids in.

I didn't think a regular petrol engine would run on e85?
 
I have a complete kit here that came with the P38 from Dave. If you want it. Probably a bit far for you to come but its all there.

I hope the old girl is doing you proud ? . The lpg kit I question is a prins I belive the top of the range. It's plug and play but only for the thor engine as it includes the inlet manifold complete engine harness lpg tank to replace the spare wheel in the boot. It cost a fair bit when I bought it I just never got round to fitting it.

Hi Dave, it certainly is a pleasure to drive! I have done around 1,000 miles so far. Two new tyres as you pointed out. It passed the MOT as expected :) It is my daily driver and takes me to work and back 4 days a week. I am a verty happy P38 owner :D
 
I'm toying with the idea of putting my 4.2 supercharger back on LPG we have 2 garages near me that supply lpg
I've never had lpg before so don't really know the benefits of having it fitted
