Hello all,

Bought a 1996 defender 110 300tdi about a year ago, it had an overheating issue which led me to replace expansion tank, cap, radiator, water pump, fan, thermostat and eventually the head gasket. Did the gasket myself didn’t skim on advise from an old mechanic friend. All has run well until about a month ago the cap blew off, air lock and no circulation. Replaced cap a week later it did it again so bought a £30 cap and new expansion tank bled it and all good. Today out and about the truck was running well for about 40 minutes but when I turned off the engine ther was a gurgling sound, checked expansion tank and the coolant level had dropped almost to empty, there were no signs of fluid at the expansion cap, I released the pressure the level came up slightly so I topped up, set off all good until i finally stopped, checked the level and it was down about a centimetre and a half. Any thoughts? Please? Could it just be that i left air in the system? Head gone again? I need the truck working and this seems to have been a constant problem for a year.

Many thanks Ian

Wont be air left in the system, once stat has opened it should have self bled.
Get head pressure tested would be my advice.
