Having put several posts on other related threads I have finished my checks and am no nearer solving this problem with my 2002 TD4.

When accelerating up hills it 'pinks' badly. Have tried higher quality fuel, 2 stroke in tank, now have substituted each injector in turn with a re-serviced one and it still does it !

Have looked to exhaust and manifold leaks - nothing found.

When revved stationary - no problems, as soon as engine works a bit - slight incline and off it goes again. Driving me mad. Seems to drive o.k - slight black puff when it starts to pull hard. Also, have disconnected the turbo vacuum pipe to isolate that and no change with turbo disconnected.

Anyone help please - either to find the noise or reassure me that there is nothing to worry about ! Have taken live data and all seems normal (fuel pressures etc.). Airflow is a bit down at 409 ish mg/stroke. When running well it was up to high 600's. Getting very good at taking the inlet manifold on and off and at getting injectors out !!!! Thanks............

It could be a MAF degrading. This would also show as a lower than normal measured air mass.

If it's any consolation, lots of TD4s and other diesels pink and rattle when under throttle, mine included. I don't really notice it now, I just drive it and enjoy it.

Thanks both. Have already done a MAF disconnected test, still pinking, but be interesting to see if Air Mass data reading changes - will check.

Accepting I may need to live with this, just like everything quiet and 'as it was' - dunno why it should just start, old age I guess??

If I crack it will surely feedback as I can see a load of TD4 owners have similar problems. Trying higher quality fuel too from today.

Have been using my Td4 and getting annoyed with what I thought was 'pinking'. Under load only and fairly background. Until yesterday. Now the sound is there when you rev up while stationary. Sounds like machine gun fire. Have so far - removed belts to eliminate externals. Used a stetho and it seems to be coming from the drivers side of the sump. Engine seems a bit 'fumey' but that may just be me revving it up to listen. Have (hopefully) attached a sound file. A bit of tick over while I start the recorder then the noise. Anyone got ideas?? I'm thinking big end, crank bearing or oil pump - is it time to say goodbye to my 157k TD4 ???

Can't upload sound file - it is a .3gp from my phone. Anyone know how to do this too??!

It could be the timing chain has gone loose. The tensioner could allow the chain to flap about if it fails.

There’s lots of stuff on that side - what about the accessory belt pulleys? Crank pulley?

And the top prize goes to guinea !!!
So - had previously had all the belts off. Last time the pulley went noisy this stopped the noise. That eliminated all the accessory pulleys and bits. Noise still sounded like the crank area. My lovely wife came out to see how the job was progressing, she said 'sounds external not muffled like inside' she also confirmed it sounded in the drivers side wheel arch. SO - not having a spare pulley I used my impact and loosened the centre nut a couple of turns. Success - noise changed. Tightened it up, noise back, even with no belts on. Machine gun sound. Having concluded the pulley was at fault I hammered a couple of washers into the gap between the flanges on the outer edge. Engine is quiet !!!! Thanks to all for input - I was going down timing chain route but noise was too low hence my worst fears on big end or oil pump.

So the pulley has lasted less than 30k - will be in contact with A to Z in Wakefield and will report back.

Blood pressure returning to normal and wife held in higher esteem than before (which was quite high :) ).

Let's hope that is all over, note to anyone else with mild 'pinking' - why it started under load I am unsure - not much increase in load on pulley when climbing hills !!!! Wife says resonance????? She is now taking over all vehicle maintenance and classic car restoration !!!!!

I searched the market, looked at price yes, but also went for one with a 2 year warrantee. This ran out in May 2018 ! I have made the point that it failed in May and I have been trying to diagnose the noise since then ! Not easy as it only did it on a hill at about 40mph ! Now it has got bad enough to diagnose on the drive. I have raised the issue with A to Z and they are happy to look at the defective one, we'll see - I have let them know that LandZone are watching the response ! They claim that their product is modified and improved.

I got my crank pully from here too. So far it's been OK. ..I was swayed by price n 2 year warranty too O and the free bolt which I didn't use lol.. Not sure how long its been in need to check paper work But good to know...

So still in trouble. Seems pulley noise was just the source of noise and sommat else is causing vibration to make it rattle. New one fitted sounds same. Still down on power and now get puff of smoke on start up from area near intercooler!! Thinking hole in intercooler. Anyone had this? Must admit this fault is worst my TD4 has ever presented me with!!!

Can you disconnect the post-intercooler pipe, plug it and get someone to rev the engine a bit? Maybe some soapy water will find the leak. That would explain why you’re down on power.

I had a split hose the other day - pulling a trailer on a long journey. No engine light, but down on power and black smoke on acceleration and under load. Fixed it with some rope and the rag I keep above the ABS unit for wiping the dipstick! It was the usual EGR elbow hose.

By 'blow' I mean - leak ! Mine does seem to be puffing smoke in the engine bay and I have black smoke on acceleration and have been looking for a pipe leak for a while. I can see an intercooler leak would act as a pipe split, but I am unsure whether this or sommat else is causing the engine to vibrate badly at turbo speeds. Badly enough to make a good crank pulley vibrate. If I tap the new pulley on a bit of wood there is a 'clank' as the inner rim hits the outer rim. Is the new pulley duff too??
