Is it always the Syncro?

Got a bit of a 'crunch' when going from 2nd into 3rd gear. Is that always a syncro issue or could it be the gear stick / selection end of things? I know that there is a relatively easy selector mod you can buy...can't recall the details!

Well worth trying the syn gearbox oil, transforms the r380 box.
Think difflock site sold it, though there may be other places now.

I put the difflock synthetic oil in the gearbox in my 300Tdi and it made a big difference to the notchy first to second gear change.
