is changing the clutch ie pressure plate release bearing a difficult job

is it easier to remove the engine or to remove the floor and drop the gear box etc when working on the clutch ie replacing complete clutch on my defender 90 2.5 turbo diesilthe clutch is now slipping and needs replaced :welcome2:

welcome aboard mate! I would say with one of those cos they're nice and simple, pull the engine. Me and my mate did my clutch in about 4 hours this way.
I have changed the gearbox in it in a day on my own but its a lot of crawling around!

I would remove the box. I've no lifting gear and got to work on the drive so for me its not an option to lift the engine. I would just drop the GB back on jacks enough to get to the clutch and you could get it done easy in a day...

Depends upon what kit you have available. If you only have a trolley jack then you are best off removing the floor and sliding the gearbox back on the trolley jack. If you remove the levers then there is just about enough room to slide the box back and change the clutch etc with the seatbox still in place.

removing the engine is a daft way to do a depender clutch, unless you have time and energy to waste

it took me less time to drop the engine forward than it did to move the gearbox thats all!
Maybe its just me as i've done a clutch in a fourtrack in the same way in 2 1/2 hours on my own!
True if you only got limited faclities then box is easier for sure.

i've got cranes, lifts, hoists, ramps, jacks coming outta my ears and i'd bet you a lot of money that i could do a clutch easier and faster than anyone who has the engine out(other than the LR pit crew if they ever entered a depender into F1)

thanks mate and all on the forum for your suggestions my mate who will be doing the job has all the kit for removing the engine.i think this may be the way to go to replace the clutch

Hire a hoist for around £10 a day, and take the engine out.

4 hours to do the entire job, sorted.

Sean, my personal experience, the engine out and in is much easier than the gearbox, cos I found there was more room to play with. Then again, ive done the engine about 5 or 6 times now for different reasons, gearbox only once though.

maybe we should organise the landyzone limpics and have doing a clutch as one of the events
