Hi all, bought myself a 2002 td4 a couple of weeks ago and its been brilliant until yesterday. I was pulling away from the traffic lights and next thing gearstick goes wobbly and a clattering noise comes from the front. I immediately pulled over and all i can see is loads of oil splattered everywhere. Got recovered home and had a look today. Seems the prop has done something where it enters the ird as the rubber boot has split into two. I have got a photo so will try and upload it.

prop cv has gone , it can be replaced for the time been unbolt it from ird and remove prop so you can still drive the car , its worth checking vcu isnt to stiff before fitting new cv

Not sure why the gearstick would go 'wobbly' though - unless all that grease flying around had lubricated the linkage!

If you remove the props you should be able to use it normally - it'll just be 2wd.

Easiest thing is to remove both props and VCU as a single item. No need to do anything else. You can then still drive the car while you get the UJ fixed.
Before you remove the props, you may like to test the VCU (as James suggests). Search on here and You Tube for the "1 wheel up test". If the UJ is bust and the prop just turns - you'll need to jam the from prop with a brrom handle or something to stop it turning for the test. This way you'll know whether you should change the VCU at the same time as fixing the UJ.
Once the props are off - give the rear pinion on the IRD a wiggle - although there may be a little rotary movement - there shouldn't be any/much lateral movement. Also give the oil in it a change - if it comes out greyish - its sure sign the bearings have seen better days.

as the other guys have said plus
u can just get the cv joint bearing replaced , u don't have to replace the entire prop like Land Rover dealers will tell u
go to a good engineering company and they can rebuild and replace just the y shaped bearing and a new cv boot on there for u
will save around £100 quid or so by not having to replace the entire prop
but as the other guys have said make sure u check ur vcu and don't let the end drop or u will damage the uj ,use a jack or axle stand to support it as its quiet heavy
if u do a quick search on here hippo has done an excellent thread on how to remove and test the vcu
oh and welcome to the mad house, lol

Id be tempted to replace VCU bearings as well if you are hoiking the propshaft out

I may be able to source a propshaft complete with bad bearings and good VCU
I will let the forum know if its available .
That way someone can check the VCU off car and replace the bearings with good uns,. and then its a swapout of the whole reconditioned shaft assembly, which is trivial time wise if you can get access underneath.
I am surprised no one seems to do reconned 'reasonable' complete shafts
Update, removed props and vcu. Thought i would take it for a test drive and now there is a noise from the rear, whenever i touch the accelerator or take foot of i get a loud knock which rocks the whole car including the gearstick, not happy as no funds to repair as mot is due in two weeks so looks like the end of our relationship

Have a peek at the engine mounts and steadies - one (or more!) may be goosed, causing the whole engine to move around like mad. Potentially quite a cheap repair

Rear diff front mount may be goosed - check that as its allowing the diff to move around where the prop held it in place before

ive just got a new gaiter for my prop as it started leaking a few weeks ago
